One Book July 2022

1 July is tomorrow. Who will be taking part in One Book July this year?

Firstly, what is One Book July? I believe it started in 2014. A small group of people in the planner community came up with the idea of trying to stick to just using one planner/book for the whole month of July.

There is a great post about the history of 'One Book July' in Paper Planning Magazine it goes in to full detail, so I won't repeat that here.

There are also a lot of videos on You Tube about various peoples approach to One Book July and how they faired etc.

Hopefully people will gain from the experience in taking part in the challenge.

Good luck.

Free For All Friday No 711 by Laurie

For the first time in a very long time, I am using my A5 Filofax for all planning.

For many years I used a separate bound weekly planner, so I could have a larger page size in a relatively portable book. Over the past two years when I was at home pretty much all the time, I was free to use a large bound weekly planner, along with my A5 Filofax for monthly and future planning, goals tracking, work planning, and reference. I also used a separate notebook for overspill on busy days, notes, lists, and other jottings.

While I was at home, I didn't mind having a pile of books on my table, each with a different purpose. But last month things started opening back up again, very quickly, and suddenly my system broke down when I needed to use it outside the house. I needed a portable system again.

So I moved everything into my A5 Filofax. I have tried multiple times in the past to use an A5 as my weekly planner, only to have it fail because A5 isn't a big enough page size for everything I need to write every day. I tried using weekly pages plus daily pages, which didn't work either because I was planning in too many places at once.

Now I am using my weekly pages along with undated dot grid pages. I plan on the weeklies, then each day I write my tasks for the day on the undated notes page. This helps me focus on what I need to do today, and gives me unlimited space for any notes that come up during the day.

My current system has several elements of Jotje's system in this popular guest post she did awhile back. I have tabbed sections for monthly pages, weekly pages, daily pages, lists (where I keep my categorized task lists), notes (where I can jot quick notes then move them to where they need to be later), personal, work, family, and reference.

Now I am enjoying having all my planning in one (relatively) portable book, with just one book to reach for throughout the day.

Has your planning system changed recently?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything Filofax related!

Vintage non-branded organiser - by Anita

Due to family commitments, I haven't had much spare time for a while, so consequently I now have a backlog of posts to write!

I rarely visit eBay these days, but I did have a bit of a nose last year and managed to pick up this little non-branded bargain and was surprised that there were no other bids. And as some of you might know, I have a liking for red binders...

When it arrived, it was clear to me that it needed a good clean and the leather definitely appreciated a good coating of Lord Sheraton leather balsam. The leather is good quality and has a nice smooth finish in this lovely bright red colour.

There is no brand name, but inside it says 'Genuine leather, made in England'. It doesn't have Krause rings, but they open and close with a healthy snap. Whilst it's not a Filofax, I tend to call it a 'Winchester-alike' as you can see that the design is quite similar. Like the Winchesters, it has also lost the popper cover on top.

Inside on the left, there is is one full length slip pocket, with a further two shorter pockets. On the right, there is a full length gusseted pocket with a small pen loop.

I've previously owned a couple of Winchesters, but have sold them as ultimately I'm not a fan of the harder leather. As you can see from the photo below, this leather is much more supple and will easily bend back on itself, without causing any issues.

As I normally do, I asked the eBay seller if they knew anything about its history and she confirmed that she'd bought a couple of these leather binders from a secondhand stall at a show about 20 years ago. When it arrived, it had some old non-branded inserts and a Filofax ruled dated 1989.

In comparison with my Kensington - squarer spine, like the Winchesters tend to have:

It's a wonderful binder, which potentially could've been a prototype or just a copycat design made by an English company. Considering its age, it looks like either the leather is quite hardwearing or it's not had much use over the years.

Reading

During the extremely hot weather we have been having here in South West France these last few days, I've been catching up with some reading.

Going outside even just to check for post was quite exhausting. Whilst it was 40 degrees outside I was keeping cool and calm indoors at temperatures no higher than 27 degrees, drinking plenty of plain water!.

I'm not a very fast reader, but I do enjoy a good crime novel. I've read my wife's first crime thriller Double Identity which was very good (she wasn't standing over my shoulder while I wrote that!!)

I'm also a big fan of Michael Connelly and his books about Harry Bosch and LAPD Homicide Detective and also Mickey Haller a defence attorney.

It was his books I needed to sort out, they have been written over a long period of time since 1992, and his Wikipedia Page has a detailed chart of the books when they were published and the characters in them. What I didn't know was, have I read them all, and in what order!

Now I know that there is bound to be 'an app for that' in my case it was 'I'm sure I have a template file for that

Of course we do... here!

A5 Templates:
Personal Templates:
I printed off a few these sheets for A5 and started on checking off the books. Fortunately I only discovered a couple I've missed off my reading journey which I will add to my Kindle in due course.

What books have you read recently?

Free For All Friday - No. 710 by Anita

Whilst looking at some of my earlier posts here, I realised that 2019 was my 10th anniversary of using a Filofax, as I purchased my first one back in 2009!

Some of my journey:

  • I purchased David Allen's book Getting Things Done at the beginning of 2009 and starting searching for 'refillable leather notebook' to use for my GTD system. Unsurprisingly this search brought me to Filofax, but I'd never used one previously
  • Purchased my cherry personal Classic later in 2009 - it was beautiful, but never laid flat and then developed the known issue of bubbles/cracking on the leather coating. Replaced with a crimson Malden by Filofax
  • I came across Philofaxy, but didn't really start reading it until maybe a year later
  • Reader Under the Spotlight in 2011
  • Joined as a contributor to Philofaxy in May 2012, resigned for some time (not sure of the dates) and then rejoined back in 2019
  • Bought and sold many Filofaxes over the years - I have no idea how many I'd own if I didn't sell, but this has meant that I've enjoyed the variety whilst normally owning less than five (I'm a bit of a minimalist at heart).

So, what have I learnt so far?

  • Personal size is what suits me best - I have also used A5 for managing projects and for work, but I love the portability of personal. If I was buying my first one now, I'd maybe go with A6, but all of my supplies are in personal and I'm used to the kinda skinny page dimension now
  • I will go through some cycles of buying more, then selling and eventually settling back to owning just the one
  • I'm very grateful to be a part of the wonderful Philofaxy community as it's such a source of inspiration and I've loved attending London meet ups
  • What works for me personally:
    • Open it up each day, unless it's a rest day
    • Do a regular review
    • Don't mess with my set up - I have two set ups that work well for me: 1) GTD based and 2) Simplified. However, that said... I will shortly be having a change to help me clear a backlog, so will post more about that soon
    • Don't change sizes - I admit that I can feel tempted to try out a different size, but personal just works for me
    • Just use it and don't try to keep it too neat.

Have you recently reached an organiser anniversary of how long you've owned or used one?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related. I hope that you have a great weekend.

16 June 2022

Where have all the bloggers gone...... far far away?!

You might have noticed that blog posts from other sources are becoming a little scarce for inclusion in the weekly Saturday Web Finds posts.

My system that I use to find the posts, monitors the RSS feed of each blog and it pops up the title of the post when there is a new post. It also highlights when a blog ceases to exist.

Looking at a selection of blogs to boost the post last week I noticed that whilst a lot of the blogs are still live. Most of them didn't have any new posts for a number of years.

It almost seems like a lot of them stopped posting after 2015, it was as if someone out a notice that declared the end of Filofax blog posts on the last day of 2015.... Clearly I didn't get that Office Memo!

I will obviously continue to gather together the posts each week. If we have a bit of a sparse week I will dip in to the archives of some of the now 'dormant' blogs.

[Update: Things are looking better this week. Plus I've had a couple of new sources sent to me to monitor, so we will have more than enough posts this week and in coming weeks.]
