Free For All Friday - No. 694 by Anita

After storms in the UK and then the invasion of Ukraine, I've been thinking more recently about the possibility of using a Filofax to help plan for a potential evacuation. Personal size is the main size that I use, so this could definitely work as a combined wallet and for holding important documentation. Or alternatively, I could see a zipped A5 being useful, as you would have more space for larger documents.

Living in the UK, evacuation is not something that I've really needed to consider before, so when looking around for some potential useful resources unsurprisingly I have mostly come across US-based action plans or checklists:

Do you keep or have you considered keeping emergency or evacuation information in an organiser?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related.

Tracking Your Weight Loss In Your Organiser

Keeping in trim and keeping a close watch on your own weight is not easy.

Yes some of us are blessed with the ability to be able to eat anything without our weight increasing a pound/kilogram, sadly I am not one of those people!!

I'm sure a lot of you use an 'app' to keep a track on your weight and other health data. But if you aren't comfortable about sharing this sort of information with a faceless corporation somewhere on the internet then a paper record kept in your organiser is much more private.

I've devised this simple monthly record sheet in Personal size and A5 size that you can download and print, modify it as well if you wish.

I think it is fairly self-explanatory in how you can use it. I've entered 1-31 for any month, but you can remove those if you wish.

Enter your start weight and the date and your target weight in the header box. Then enter your weight each day, you can then simply work out how much you have lost/gained since the last weigh in. The next box is the total weight loss since you started. The notes will allow you to record things like 'Heavy meal' 'Hard exercise day' or what ever. It will help you spot trends and it might help you adjust your intake/exercise regime to benefit your weight loss goals.

Before you start any form of diet it is best to seek medical advice as to what you should be aiming your target weight to be compared to your current weight.

Philofaxy Weight Chart

Here are the files:

Download the files and you can print them direct on to Personal Size paper, or A5 paper, or scale to A6 size paper.

Krause and Moterm Rings

This is an update of a post I did about 5 years ago, a few things have changed in that time, these changes are reflected in this post.

Krause rings are considered to be the best available. I use them in all my 'expensive' organisers

When they haven't come fitted with Krause rings I've fitted them myself. It is a relatively easy job to do. With the right tools and the skills it only takes a few minutes to swap out the old rings and install the new ones.

I did this video a while ago which shows the essential things you need to know about changing rings.

I have also done a more recent video, which builds on the experience of changing lots of these rings.

Until recently obtaining Krause rings wasn't a simple task... all that has changed though.

Van der Spek have now made the Krause rings available to order on their web shop.  All Van der Spek organisers come fitted with Krause rings including their excellent 'Touch Me' range.  You will find Krause rings in the Accessories section of the Van der Spek website here

Petra has supplied this useful photo of the rear side of each mechanism so you can compare them to the ones you already have to make sure they will fit your organiser.

Points worth noting as follows:
  • Junior is the same as Filofax Pocket and Gillio Pocket (same spacing as well).
  • Please note that the 20/25mm pocket rings are not interchangeable with the 16 mm pocket rings, the mounting points are a different distance apart. Therefore to use the 20 or 25mm rings the internal mounting plate would need to be changed as well.
  • Senior is the same as Mulberry Agenda and used for A6 organisers including the Gillio A6.
  • Standard is the same as Filofax Personal and Gillio Medium
  • A5 is the same as Filofax/Gillio A5, but note the three mounting points with the latch in the middle. Older A5's had only 2 mounting points not three as in this current design.
Gold rings are available at extra cost because they are gold plated to order or they get them done in small batches.

Thank you to Petra Van der Spek for the photographs and for making the rings available on their web site.

For details of the full range of Van der Spek products see their site.

If your organiser isn't fitted with this type of ring mechanism, there are some alternatives available.

If you have a ring mechanism that is riveted on the following type might be a suitable bolt on replacement.

I have bought some Moterm Ring Mechs via AliExpress, they are acceptable quality and the cost including shipping is very reasonable.

You will need to check the spacing of the securing rivets compared to the Moterm bolting points. They are very easy to fit once you have removed the old rings.

You will find the details here: AliExpress Moterm

If you do have to make new holes to fit the Moterm rings, you could fill the old holes with a similar type of domed nut and bolt arrangement, similar to the ones that Moterm supply to fit their rings. See the picture below.

Moterm rings with their fixings, very easy to attach.

What ever sort of ring mechanism you have, if you have any questions about them and this post hasn't answered your questions. Drop a comment down below or email me steve at philofaxy dot com and I will do my best to help you out.

Free For All Friday - No. 693 by Steve

The one thing I like about a Filofax is that the design isn't going to change any time soon...

In the rest of the world, so many things seem to be changing or about to change... cars going electric, heating our homes having to go away from fossil fuels, cameras going mirrorless, the list goes on.

We all have to decide when to change, unless we are forced in to changing... never good.

If you were using a particular size of Filofax ten years ago, you should be able to use the same size for the next ten years or longer!

What is the longest time you have used a particular size of Filofax?

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything Filofax or ring bound organiser related.

Have a good weekend.

Updating Your Wardrobe?

As Winter slowly turns to Spring and hopefully Summer, you might be looking at your wardrobe with thoughts about what needs updating and what needs replacing.

With the change of working habits these last two years less people are wearing suits and more comfortable 'Working At Home' wear is the new norm.

To help you decide what to consider buying I've created a simple insert for you to record your sizes and then list what you might need to buy.

The insert is in Personal size and A5 size, printing direct to Personal size or A5 size paper. You will also be able to scale it (71%) to A6 size if you wish.

As always you can customise the insert to meet your own local requirements e.g. Trousers in England equals Pants in the USA!

Why write things down? Well I will admit clothes shopping isn't one of my favourite past-times and there is nothing worse that having bought something in a shop or on-line, trying it on and then having to return it because you ordered the wrong size!

How many organisers?

How many organisers do you have to own before you can say you have 'A collection of organisers'

I am not referring to how many are in use at any one time, but total ownership. What number becomes the 'tipping point' from 'I have a few organisers' to 'I have a collection of organisers....'

And whilst you consider your answer carefully, you might find my previous post on a similar topic to this from a few years ago, with an alternative way of counting them!

Before you ask... I do not know how many are in my cupboard at the moment. That's a job on my list to do the annual check and up date my list!

Free for All Friday No. 692 by Nan

Filofax organizers are great for planning things such as appointments, schedules, and tasks. But what about tracking the time you spend doing the things you do every day, such as working, resting, rehearsing, reading, watching video, and so on.

In a Filofax, you can use a diary where the hours of the day are marked. Or you can make up your own time tracker. Do you have a favorite time tracking solution?

As always on Friday, feel free to discuss anything related to ring-bound organizers!
