Free for All Friday No. 894 by Nan

For the next week or so, with the bulk of the winter holidays behind us and a new year on the horizon, the last few weeks, we've had a few posts dealing with planning for 2026. The next few quiet days, I'd like to take a look back as well.

We can take a moment and note blessings we've been grateful for in 2025, challenges met, new friends made, old friendships strengthened, difficulties overcome, goals accomplished, and most importantly lessons learned!

Of course, these are personal matters, so instead of sharing in the comments, you may wish to set aside a page in your organizer to review the past year.

I would like to take this time to extend my best wishes to everyone in the Philofaxy community.

And as always on Friday, all discussion of organizer-related issues is welcome in the comments!

Christmas Eve in Filofax Land

By Christmas Eve, the Filofax Personal Organiser factory hummed with a very specific kind of panic—the tidy, colour-coded panic of elves who loved lists but were running out of time.

The night shift clock chimed 23:47, and the bell above the factory floor rang cheerfully, as if to say, You are only thirteen minutes behind schedule.

“Right!” shouted Tinselwick, Head of Personal Planning and Mild Stress. “Final checklist! Everyone consult your organisers!”

A thousand tiny Filofaxes snapped open at once. Tabs fluttered. Stickers sparkled. Someone spilled glitter into Section D: Errands.

At Table One, Hollyquill the elf was cross-checking appointments.

“Who scheduled ‘Reindeer Hoof Polish – 11:55 PM’ immediately after ‘Global Gift Dispatch’?” she demanded.

“That was me,” said Bramble. “I thought we could multitask.”

“You cannot multitask reindeer,” Hollyquill snapped, ticking the box anyway. Elves believed in optimism.

Meanwhile, down the conveyor belt, the organisers themselves rolled past in pristine rows—leather covers polished, pages perfectly aligned, ribbon dangling from the pen loops like tiny tongues of judgment.

“Careful with the weekly planners!” cried Peppermint Joe. “Those are the ones with the motivational quotes!”

One organiser flipped open mid-inspection and revealed a quote that read:

You have exactly the same hours in a day as Santa Claus.

The elves stared at it in silence.

“…Rude,” muttered someone.

In the Binding Department, disaster struck. A junior elf named Fig had accidentally mixed the ‘Life Goals’ inserts with the ‘Emergency Snacks’ section.

“Why does this organiser say my dream is ‘Eat chocolate, then eat more chocolate’?” asked Tinselwick.

Fig shrugged. “It’s aspirational.”

As midnight crept closer, the factory grew frantic. Bells jingled. Pages fluttered. One elf sprinted past yelling, “Who moved my to-do list?! I had everything on there!”

Finally, the Great Quality Control Elf emerged, holding the last organiser aloft.

“Tabs aligned?”
“Yes!”
“Paper smooth?” “Yes!”
“Pocket for secret biscuits?”
“…Optional, but yes.”

The clock struck twelve.

Outside, sleigh bells rang.

The elves cheered, collapsing into beanbags and unused planner boxes. Another Christmas Eve saved—thanks to careful scheduling, minor chaos, and at least three backup lists titled FINAL FINAL VERSION.

As the lights dimmed, Tinselwick opened his organiser one last time and checked off the final item:

Save Christmas ✅

Then he added a note underneath:

Next year: start earlier.

🎄Merry Christmas to your all in Philofaxy land from everyone on the team at Philofaxy HQ🎄

Gifts for a Filofax user?

Yes it is that time of year again. What would you get as a gift for a Filofax user?

My own ideas:
  • Paper, blank punched
  • Pen, may be a fountain pen e.g. Parker IM
  • Labelling machine - very useful around the house as well as for dividers.
What would you like to receive?

Christmas gift ideas for the dedicated organiser user.

If you have checked the date today you might have realised that 'the seasonal day of celebration' is a month away. Groan! Bah Humbug!

OK here are a few gift ideas you can suggested to your nearest and dearest if you have run out of ideas, or just treat yourself... why not!

Each is linked to Amazon via an affiliate link, if you purchase via this link then we will earn a very small commission from these purchases. This commission goes to our annual donation to Chimwemwe the children's charity.

Paper - The 'food' of any organiser here in A5, A4 (USA) and A4 (UK)

Paper Punch - The Rapesco is a great punch for Mini, Pocket, A6, Personal size and with some care you can use it for A5 too. We have also found a great A5 punch too, this also does all the smaller sizes too.

Hole Reinforcing Tool - I've found these little gadgets great to reinforce my pages in my organiser and they are very easy to apply and get the rings centralised perfectly every time.

Pens - Without pens your paper will remain blank!

Index tabs - these are great if you are creating your own dividers and you want the tabs to look neat.

Label Makers - Useful for labelling archives and dividers and numerous other things around the house.

Happy shopping.

Happy Christmas from Chimwemwe

Christmas across the globe is a wonderful time when people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

This is the time when families and friends meet together to share meals, gifts, joy and love. In Malawi, just like in many other places, parents and guardians do their best to treat their children with special clothes and other gifts.

Unfortunately, there are many other children whose parents and guardians have died, often due to HIV/AIDS. Without anyone to care for them, these children end up living in the streets where life is extremely difficult. To them, Christmas is a time of sadness and pain as they watch other children from well to do families celebrating with their loved ones.

Charles
Charles 8, Vincent 11 and Petred 13 are some of the children who have grown to hate Christmas due to the loss of their parents. Although all three come from different families, they became friends while living in the streets. For a while, all of them were living in the Chimwemwe Children’s Centre, but the centre had to close in late October due to financial constraints.

However, Chimwemwe has helped them to find alternative shelter. Petred is now living at the Samaritan Trust, an organization that supports street children. Charles is currently placed at Mpemba Boys’ Home, a former reformatory Center for Juveniles and Vincent is now living with his aunt in Ndirande Township – one of the biggest districts in Malawi.

For all of these children, this will be their first Christmas in these new homes. However, none of them is really keen or looking forward to Christmas this year.

Charles feels that living at Mpemba boys home is lonely and not really exciting. Christmas day will be just like any other day, and to make it worse, the children at the home will not be able to have a traditional Malawian Christmas meal which is rice and meat. Instead they will have the usual meal they eat (which feels a little like a prison meal to them).

“I really feel bad that Christmas has arrived. It’ll be so painful to see other kids celebrating with their families while we do not have an opportunity to be with our families or at least eat something nice. I look forward to see Christmas go as quick as possible,” says Charles.

Petred (far right)
For Petred this is a sad time being at the Samaritan Trust because most of the other children there have gone to be with their families, leaving only a few other children at the home. Petred will also have to do with the ordinary Malawian meal every one eats on a daily basis – vegetable stew and nsima (a starchy substance made from maize).

This is what he says:
“To be honest, I am not really looking forward to Christmas. Our friends from other families will receive gifts, new clothes and rice and beef. For me and other kids here we will have to do with an ordinary meal. I feel very lonely and isolated.”

Vincent
Although Vincent will be with his aunt, the fact it is Christmas will mean nothing because the aunt thinks that the little resources they have must be carefully budgeted for the month of January.

“My aunt thinks that buying extra things for Christmas is a waste of the little money she has and she needs to plan for the month of January which is one of the most difficult months for most Malawians in terms of hunger.”

The story of little Charles, Vincent and Petred is a true example of what life Christmas is like for poor and vulnerable children who have been found on the wrong side of life after losing parents. However, the positive side of the story is that all these three children are being supported by Chimwemwe to go to school which is their only hope that one day they will live a decent life. This is being reflected in Petred’s own words.

“I am very hopeful of life that one day, we shall live to celebrate Christmas with joy because of the support we continue to receive from Chimwemwe. Attending school is our only hope that we shall be able to get a job and earn our own money to help us look for our own families.”

Thank you to Amanda for this timely update about our support work for the charity she works with.

I know a lot of you have given donations throughout the year when you have sold items through Ad-spot and all these small donations all add up, and thank you for those.

Even if you have only bought from Filofax UK, but you clicked on a Filofax link on Philofaxy then you too have contributed to Chimwemwe.

Each time someone buys via one of those links on Philofaxy a small commission is paid in to an account.  Yesterday I made a donation on your behalf, so thank you for continuing to use the links on Philofaxy, it all goes to a very good cause.

Individual donations to Chimwemwe are very easy to do via PayPal, with or without a PayPal account.

Thank you everyone for your continued support. I hope you have a Happy Christmas.

Free For All Friday No. 58

Merry Christmas everybody!!!!

Did Santa bring you any Filofax goodies?

11 December 2009

Free For All Friday No. 56

Well two weeks to go.... I hope you have got your Filofax orders in in plenty of time to Santa... otherwise you might have a sad time opening your presents on the 25th...

I'm not a big fan of December, not because of Christmas, it's just that in my industry people are dashing around like headless chickens trying to get a months work done in just over 3 weeks. It does lead to some interesting times!

But I'm not one of the headless chickens... ah you see my secret weapon, my Filofax has it all under control. Technically my workplace closes for a few days over the holiday, but in reality some one could get called in, myself included. So it is wise to have everything in hand. Contacts up to date, notes of my teams where abouts over the holiday in case I have to call on someone.

So how are your plans coming together for the festive season?
