What else is in your organiser?

Your diary insert is most probably the most important component of your organiser, or the most frequently  viewed pages and pages you up date the most often.

What else do you keep in your organiser? Here is a list of 'stuff' currently lurking in my own organiser.

  • Maps - I have always loved maps from a young age. I have them for France, London and transport ones too.
  • To Do Lists - Some long term things, my daily to-do tasks live on my planner pages.
  • Notes pages, these include my travel packing lists, I also keep a few sheets of blank lined paper here too.
  • Reference pages - These are fairly random in terms of the contents, but they contain pages that I've created or printed from various sources of miscellaneous information that I need to easily find without a computer being available. It is where my maps live as well. I also keep a copy of my Popular Paper Sizes chart in here too.
What else do you carry? What accessories do you include?

Guest Post: Filofax Japan 100 Years Centennial Edition

We have to thank Nick for sending in the following post about his recent purchase of the Filofax Japan Centennial Edition that we featured last year here on Philofaxy.

I’ve never seen or held a classic Winchester in person, but after you posted about the Japanese Winchester Centennial release, I became curious. I watched several auctions on eBay, but all were ridiculously overpriced. Finally, I noticed one available via Amazon Japan for what I believe to be the retail price (approx. 361 USD), and I decided to pull the trigger.

It’s beautifully packaged – large outer cardboard carton, and a very durable, thick box with an interior cover insert and velvety cloth wrapping.

I’m very impressed by the binder’s quality – perfect stitching (unlike the Chester, it’s a seamless edge, rather than having the leather wrapped around), and beautiful 25mm gold rings perfectly aligned. It’s an incredibly durable and thick binder – much sturdier than others I own, including the Chester – but even after a week’s use it’s begun to soften a bit, and feels softer to the touch. You can tell this is made to last a lifetime.

The flyleaf is great – and unlike the Heritage flyleaf, the ring holes are sufficiently large so that it moves and turns seamlessly without snagging.

I very much like the ring protectors, though the design makes it difficult to access the pockets (made even more difficult by the thickness and stiffness of the leather). And the pen loop is about the smallest I’ve seen, with no give. For now I’ve been sliding my pen clip through the loop.

The fill (not pictured) was disappointing – exactly the same as the standard Luxury fill (icon front sheet, cotton cream stationery, brown ruler/pagemarker).

All in all, I’m very pleased – I hope Filofax decides to launch a reissue in the UK/US as well.

Thank you Nick for sharing the images and your thoughts about this organiser. What do you think, would you buy one? Let us know in the comments below.

Free For All Friday - No. 705 by Steve

A few years ago I made the observation that the transition from Spring to Summer brought about a change in the size of organiser people used for the summer months.

We would often see people move from A5 to Personal or Personal to Pocket. The reasons people did this seemed to vary. I wondered if people wanted something smaller because summer clothes/bags didn’t lend themselves so well to larger organisers.

I have tended to stay in the same size organiser all year around. The actual model of organiser might change, but it’s the same page size.

If anything my organiser starts to really get used even more at this time of year, this is down to more travelling and a lot more tasks at this time of the year with things to be done outside in the garden that are generally left alone in winter.

Do you change the size of your organiser in the summer or not?

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything else organiser related. Have a productive and pleasant weekend.

Free for All Friday No. 704 by Nan

Do you use your ring-bound organizer for everything, or do you use a bound notebook for other purposes—journaling or a special project, for example?

I'm often tempted to journal on a blank page in my organizer, but I find the pages can get lost among everything else. I like to journal in a separate bound book where I can see the flow of my thoughts.

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss or ask anything related to Filofaxes or other ring-bound organizers!

Comparing the Filofax Belmont and the Filofax York

These two organisers come from two very different eras in the time line of the Filofax company.

The Belmont from the 'modern' era of about 2004-2006 and available in Pocket, Personal and A5

The York model was around from about 1993-1998 and it was available in  Mini, Pocket, Personal, A5 and Deskfax sizes.

Today I'm just going to compare the personal size in each model.

Both models were only available in Black and Tan leather, I have both in Tan as you will see from the photos.

The York feels more 'traditional' in its design and looking at it in detail, it is made to a higher standard than the Belmont.

The Belmont on the left has the more 'stylish' clasp and contrast detailed stitching compared to the York on the right, which could have been made in any decade from 1950 onwards!

The detailed stitching on the Belmont continues to the back cover on the clasp as well. The York is a lot simpler in its design.

The spine as well on the Belmont is treated to the detailed contrast stitching.

Internally the Belmont Personal size has a very simple layout. On the left hand side we have four vertical card slots and a full height vertical slip pocket. On the right hand side another two card slots and another full height vertical slip pocket. It also features two pen loops and 23 mm rings

On the front cover it features a neat double popper arrangement allowing you to expand the capacity of the organiser as needed. The unused popper remains covered by the clasp in either position, which is great.

The York features 8 horizontal card slots and a full height slip pocket on the left hand side. On the right hand side it has another full height slip pocket and a zip pocket. The zipper is covered by an extension to the pocket. Again two pen loops and 23 mm rings.

Earlier York models had the model details in gold lettering as shown below, later ones became embossed.

The Belmont states it is made from Italian calf leather. The York just states Calf Leather, but 'Made in Italy' It's also labelled 'Filofax of England'

As a bit of trivia Belmont is a town in Durham, although the village name appears in other parts of UK as well. Belmont is the site of a TV/Radio transmitter, hence how I know it!

Which do you prefer? The Belmont or the York?
