Free For All Friday - No. 681

I love it when I find another use for a Filofax organiser.... this last summer I inherited a 'new to me' digital camera from a friend in UK along with manuals and various reference books for this exact camera.

The camera is a Nikon and as I've been a Canon user for over two decades, the menu system and controls are very new to me! I've been getting by, but recently I started to delve in to the manual and the books to discover more about the camera.

This was when I hit on a memory problem... my own memory that is, nothing to do with computers! I kept forgetting which book/manual I had read something in.

Filofax to the rescue... I picked out a personal size organiser along with a set of A-Z index dividers and some lined paper. I labelled the books 1-4 and then started writing simple notes or topics onto the pages adding in the book number and page number against each topic header.

The topics such as F for Flash really simplified the problem of which book to refer back to when I was cross checking a topic in one of the other books!

It has improve my understanding of the camera and hopefully I will be taking better photographs with it soon.

Have you found some novel new users for your organisers? Of course it is a Friday so don't forget you are free to discuss anything organiser related.

Using more than one organiser?

I was looking back through some old posts and came across a very cryptically titled 'Two Filofax Morton...' from November 2013.

In that post as you will see, I was outlining how I was using two organisers, an A5 and a Personal size to organise my life. A few years later I stopped that practice and swapped back to just one, the A5.

In the past, in discussion with others this topic has come up of should you use more than one organiser or not. I had my own reasons at the time, but things change over time and I'm now a firm believer in just using one to organiser to run my life.

With a lot of people still working 'at home' I wonder if people that previously had an organiser dedicated to their work activities and a separate one for their home life have also amalgamated them in to one organiser?

In my case it was the duplication of the calendars and to a lesser extent tasks and other information that stopped me using two organisers. Instead I have intensified my use of just the one organiser an A5. I'm still using the same A5 diary insert as I was back in 2013!

Are you a 'single organiser person' or do you use more than one organiser in your day to day life?

Filofax on the Internet?

I was curious about an element of the history of Filofax and their website the other day.

"When did Filofax have their first website?"

Should be a simple question to answer? Well sort of, looking at the catalogues we have in the archive, the first mention I see of a web address is in the 1999/2000 catalogues. 1999 in the case of a USA sales brochure and the full catalogue for UK in 2000

Remember in UK people would have still been on dial-up modems (56k) at best in 2000, ADSL broadband didn't start to get rolled out until 2002-2003. Any website would have had to been fairly streamlined to have worked back then compared to what we see today.

The first web address I found was http://www.filofax.com. Putting that in to the 'Web Archive' found captures going back to December 1996. But when you look at the page it displays 'The Daily Planner' with a Broadway, New York address with info@filofax.com And the fILOFAX logo on the page.

Later captures do display some of the elements I remember from the early 2000's such as the phone number for ordering! Also 'For best results use: Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.0!' I doubt if the download links work these days!

Another address in the USA used from 2000/2001 is www.filofax-usa.com or www.filofaxusa.com the earliest captures I could find that displayed anything close to what we would recognise as a 'web page' was the in January 2001

Sadly the Web Archive only captures the text and not all of the images.

The web site was just a virtual catalogue in the early days, there was no on-line ordering back then. You could order by phone and sadly missed these days, they included a list of stockists, that you could filter by county.

It was an interesting look back at the early pages of the internet world wide web. I created some web pages in 1994 for our internal network at work, all very unofficial at first! I created a website for Alison's business in about 1995 but the earliest capture I could find was 1998! Most of it still works too! Website coding was a very simple affair and by hand back then!

It was also the start of the Pembury Village News website.... which is still going today at https://pembury.org!! But that's getting a bit off topic....

What do you miss on the current Filofax website that was included in the past?

Free for All Friday No. 680 by Nan

On the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, the Grace character is seen tossing a Filofax-type organizer into her bag. Grace is an overachieving perfectionist, in contrast to Frankie's creative, spiritually minded hippie. It occurs to me that directors use organizers as a prop when they want to show that a character is organized, successful—a Type-A, so to speak.

When I pull out my Filofax—the one in which I store all of my credit, insurance, and rewards cards—people often say something like, "You're so organized!" even though I'm really not.

Is there a Filofax personality type? Does your Filofax reflect your personality, or vice-versa?

Of course, since it's Friday, feel free to discuss anything organizer-related!

Know Your Numbers

When did you last have your blood pressure checked? Do you 'know your numbers'? Having your blood pressure checked is quite a simple thing to do on a regular basis.

If you don't have your own monitor to do the check your local pharmacy will have one or you can buy one, they aren't too expensive.

High or low blood pressure gives rise to lots of other medical conditions. I'm no medical expert, but there are plenty of on-line help pages that explain the conditions and how your blood pressure can be controlled.

However, this isn't by any stretch of the imagination an on-line medical blog! If you are doing regular blood pressure checks on the instruction of your doctor, then this insert will not doubt help you record the numbers, there a lot of them!

Doctors vary, but mine asked me to do three measurements spaced by a few minutes twice a day, so three in the morning and three in the evening.

I have created this insert in A5 size and Personal size, it might scale ok to A6 size as well depending on how neat your hand writing is.
