A date for your diary - Sunday 6 May 2018

We are going to run another conference round-table voice/video chat using Skype.

When? - Sunday 6 May at the following times:
  • London 10:00 am,
  • Paris 11:00 am,
  • Brisbane 7:00 pm time.
Additionally we will be on line later in the day at the following times:
  • Los Angeles 8:00 am,
  • Denver 9:00 am
  • Dallas 10:00 am,
  • New York 11:00am,
  • London 4:00 pm
  • Paris 5:00 pm etc.
The timing of these two sessions have been chosen to hopefully allow as many people to join in compared to previous round-tables.

Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of one of our sessions each one lasts 2-3 hours so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish)

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a few of us will be on video as well.

Who - All of you... connect up with Philofaxy and we will attempt to get as many of us linked in to the audio conference as possible. Come and listen if you don't want to chat.  What do we talk about? Filofax stuff... but anything else as well. It's like long lost friends meeting up for coffee and a catch up.. but don't worry if you have never joined in before... you are an old friend too!

If you have any questions you want to ask then please let us know in the group or before we start.

How -
  1. Connect to Philofaxy by firstly searching for Philofaxy in Skype, I will then add you as a contact.
  2. Then  'Send Contact Request',  I will then add you in to the chat room.
  3. Then if you request it, I can add you to the audio conference as well. But if you just want to chat via keyboard that's fine. That way it's slightly less hectic for me!
Come and join in the fun, even if you only pop in to say hello... but don't be afraid to join in the discussion.

As with previous round-tables there will also be a parallel text chat room going at the same time as the voice conference, so you can listen to the voice chat and type if you wish, just mute your microphone in Skype

If you need any assistance setting up Skype, please pop a comment in this post and I will try and help you get one line. Skype is free for computer to computer calls....

Here is my post on how to improve your Skype audio with headphones or a headset.

Hope to be chatting with you on Sunday 6 May 2018.

Free For All Friday No. 493

This week has been National Stationery Week in UK.

I came across a couple of links on the National Stationery Week Facebook Page about hand writing:
My own handwriting is not very good, never has been, bad enough to be considered good enough to be a Doctor!!! I can remember at primary school being kept in the class at break times to do writing exercises to try and improve my hand writing, it made no difference!

It wasn't until recently when I started to use fountain pens on a more regular basis that I think I worked out why my hand writing is so bad.

Because I'm effectively blind in one eye (always has been since birth) I don't have true stereophonic vision or 3D vision. So when I lift the pen nib to move to the next character or the next word. I struggle to know where the tip of the nib is going to land on the paper.

It is down to poor hand and eye co-ordination when dealing with very small movements. Try writing with one eye covered up you will see what I mean! May be I should try practicing my hand writing a bit more to see if I can improve it now I think I know what the problem is!

I think hand writing is very important, our hand writing style tells us a lot about the person, especially for future generations.

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything organiser related as well as the topic above.

Have a great weekend.

Guest Post - Memories - Elizabeth

Thank you to Elizabeth for this Guest Post.

The blogpost about the Single Ring Organiser from Steve and the video from Joe Van Cleave brought back some memories. As a life time paper lover I was always interested in paper based solutions. Yes I love digital too and for planning, to do lists and the lot I did stray in the digital world for a while. Thus I forgot some of the very useable if not to say genius solutions out there. I am back to paper since a few years and loving it. But that is another story.

Back in the days, well not my early years of using paper, that was in the dark ages. It was probably around 2005/2006 when I did use a Hipster PDA as a cleaning schedule. I used smaller index cards with the horizontal lines. I bound them with a bulldog clip and rotated the cards as the tasks  were done.

I remember trying several formats. Weekly cleaning, monthly cleaning, zone cleaning. In the end it didn’t work for me so I abandoned it. I don’t have the schedule any more off course but I do have some of those indexcards still laying around.

The video and browsing the sites of D*I*Y Planner and 43 Folders again made me think of another genius paper solution. My sister, also a paper lover, alerted me, around that same time I think, to the Pocketmod. This is a very small notebook folded from one sheet of paper.

The Pocketmod website had some templates you could use to make a pdf. You printed the pdf and folded and cut it in a certain way. The folding was a bit confusing at first but when you managed the first one the next one was simple. I used it as a small notebook with a yearly view in front. I also used it as a training schedule/tracker. I loved the possibilities of the idea.

To be honest I didn’t remember the name of the notebook. But on the D*I*Y planner website I found a link to with the name. It was “Pocketmod reboot". To my surprise it linked to a Kickstarter campaign which ended in March! They are building a new site with a new pocketmod application. Coincidence or not?

I am really sorry I missed that campaign, but will look for another way to make a donation. It will be so nice to use that pocketmod again. It is useful for a lot of things you need to remember and it is so small it doesn’t bulk up your planner. Oh those possibilities!

Now that I have been thinking about it. If it was used with an A4 sheet, the size of the notebook is A7. But what if you print it on A3? If I am correct it would give an A6 size. For all the A6 lovers out there it can be an idea if you tweak the design. If I figure out how I will let you know.

Another surprise was that on the D*I*Y planner website there are some forum topics that are still active! I wonder if there is an overlap between the two planner communities?

Thank you Steve and Joe for making me rediscover the Hipster PDA, Pocketmod and the websites D*I*Y planner and 43-folders again.

Thank you Elizabeth, it was the PocketMod that I was trying to remember when I wrote the 'Single Ring Organiser' post, but my memory was in need of an upgrade!.

If you visit PocketMod you will need a browser with Flash enabled to be able to use it. But it does still function. I created a Pocket Mod as shown in the photos below. There are lots of 'pages' you can pick from and add.

I created this example just as a test.

I look forward to trying out the new website once it is fully launched.

Who else has tried out the PocketMod?

Gardening for your organiser

There is a lot of colour in our garden at this time of year.

If like me you are a bit of an amateur gardener and you need reminders as to when to do certain tasks in the garden at this time of year, then you might like to print off this simple guide for when to prune your plants and shrubs.

Links Page

Well not before time, another job on my 'someday' list has been at last ticked off..... 'Update Philofaxy Links page'

I can not remember when it was last updated, hangs head in shame.... However looking through all the blogs listed it seems like time has stood still for the last 5 years in some cases.

Too many active blogs with their last post about something Filofax or similar, then nothing for the last 4-5 years or more.

Naturally a lot of blogs have deleted their content and gone to the blogosphere in the sky to be recycled. I've removed those.

The next task for me to do is to add new active blogs to the links list. If your blog isn't already on the list please get in touch with me and I will add it.

Free for All Friday No. 492 by Nan

We talk a lot on social media about the organizer of our dreams - the elusive unicorn! But have you ever seen a Filofax in a dream?

I had a vivid nightmare a few years ago where I lost a Filofax and traveled far and wide to find it. But I couldn't get it back. If you ascribe meaning to dreams, I guess it means I was afraid of losing something.

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything related to ring-bound organizers (or dreams)!

World Maps

I love maps, I always have done since I was in primary school. Not sure what sparked my interest in maps, but I can spend many a happy hour looking at a map reading the details revealed by the symbols and the lines.

Maps do go out of date, the maps I bought originally for my first Filofax in 1987 still had East and West Germany on them!

So maps are essential to me in any size of organiser.

I was recently asked if I knew of a source of world maps for Pocket size organisers and could I create one. Not difficult once you have a reasonable quality map image.

So here are some for you to download and print yourself. A world physical map and a time zone map.

World Map
Time Zone Map
Printing the above:
  • A5 Print on A4 size paper then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • A6 Print on A5 size paper then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • Personal Print on A4 size paper cut to 171 mm high then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
  • Pocket Print on A4 size paper cut to 120 mm high then fold in half and fold back to the edge (Z fold)
If you want to use the PNG images for say a dashboard or divider they are here.

Stockholm Meet Up - 6 June 2018

At the beginning of June, Alison and I will be travelling to Sweden for about 10 days to visit some friends (one of Alison's author friends). We will be travelling around quite a bit during our short stay, but we will be in Stockholm in the middle of our visit.

So I would like to announce today that there will be a meet up in Stockholm on 6 June 2018. Yes it is mid-week, but the 6 June is I believe a National public holiday in Sweden.

The meet up is being co-ordinated with my good friend Janet Carr of 'This Bug's Life' at this point we have discussed a few ideas, but nothing is set in concrete yet.

So if you are interested in coming along to the meet up. Please contact me steve at philofaxy dot com or contact me via Facebook messenger and we will co-ordinate the details of the meet up with everyone interested.

I'm told there is a Vapiano's in Stockholm 😀 so that's high on the list of possible places to eat/meet at!!

It will be great to meet Janet again.
