Filofax Calculators

I'm not sure why, but I frequently find I need a calculator and I don't have my phone handy.

Then I remembered 'I'm sure I have a Filofax calculator somewhere?'

In deed I do and amazingly it didn't take me 3 hours to find it, it was with my other calculators... yes I have quite a few!

It is solar powered, but having been sat in my desk in the dark for many months it took a boost to get it running again. I sat it in the sun for a few hours and it came back to life. As you can see all the segments on the display also work.

Filofax made these calculators in a few sizes, I have a Pocket/Mini one as well. This Personal size one is labeled Personal, A5 and Deskfax size.

I also found this simple credit card size solar powered calculator from Texas Instruments, it will slot in to a business card pocket in my organiser and therefore it won't take up valuable space on the rings.

Again only simple functions, but the essential ones for those moments when you need to quickly total things on a list or similar.

These credit card size calculators are readily available and they are very cheap (less than €3 each!)

  1. I have a few of these, I like them very much. Mainly because I’m an accountant and these things (and those big calculators with the till roll on!) take me back to when I was a young auditor, carrying a heavy pilot case to clients premises as we only had one computer on a desk in the corner of the office.
I have a Solar Cell Calculator FC- 515 which is driving me nuts as it won’t turn on. But I don’t want to give up on it as it’s a great 6 inch ruler for a personal organiser too.

They do take a little bit too much space up in an organiser in reality but nostalgia means I keep them around.

I do use a hand sized calculator very often rather than relying on my phone, or a spreadsheet. Pressing the large buttons is more satisfying somehow.

  2. Meant to say, but forgot, I love the credit card sized one, I might get one of those. It can sit along side my Victorinox SwissCard which is also perfect for an organiser pocket.

    1. The SwissCard is a great accessory. In the meantime there are different versions available, so you can pick a model that suits you best.

Because of the included (emergency) pen, I have one in my Rhodia Mini, where no other pen would fit.
