I am a Hobonichi user but I am very happy to say I got my first Filofax today in a charity shop in Wales. It is a 1985 wine coloured one, with Made in England and Calf Leather and CLF 7/8 in the back. It's a bit scuffed and I was wondering a) what the Philofaxers would recommend in restoring the leather b) what the name of the type is so I can learn more about it. I am new to Filofax but have a strong love of the analogue world. Rhian
ReplyDeleteThe insert dates can pre-date, or post-date the binder; original inserts, printed/designed before the binder, or replacement inserts added later.
DeleteThe 'CLF 7/8' is missing a digit at the beginning; this is a count of the number of pockets in the design (e.g. 2CLF, 4CLF). CLF is calf leather, with fastener (clasp). 7/8 is the ring size (7/8"). If you describe the pocket layout, we can probably identify it. Some binders did not have names, and just existed by the code (which was introduced in 1980, replacing a previous coding that had been used at least as far back as 1937).
The leather is probably best treated with a leather balm, such as 'Lord Sheraton' or similar. You are unlikely to remove the scuffs, but if you wish to colour match the damage, you could try a bit of coloured shoe polish on the scuff.
Hi
Deletefor small scuffs where the contrast between the leather and the scuff is pronounced I have used leather paint and a cotton bud to dab the patch.
I bought an old red Finsbury from eBay that was in worse condition than I’d hoped and a light touch with a cotton bud transformed it. Then some leather balm over the top so that the shine matched. It’s not perfect but looks massively better now.
There are lots of colours on Amazon if that’s how you want to go.
I haven’t done it with my 1980’s ones as I wanted them to show the wear of their long lives. I have a burgundy one that isn’t too bad and a black one that’s had some welly.
* I am assuming 1985 because that is what the alphabetic inserts say on them. It also has a Philips SBC 500 calculator clipped in that works! I will never use that (not my thing) so will likely stick it on ebay :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the replies! Very good point about the inserts not necessarily matching the year of the binder.
ReplyDeleteThe missing character is a 2 in front of the CLF, the inside pockets front and back are the same, a curved leather with no holes for cards or anything. Just a leather pocket.
For the leather I will give the balm a go first and see if it responds well. I also kind of like the idea of its use being visible, so thanks for planting that idea Lucy.
And thank you to you both so much for your replies! The resources here are astounding as I click around I just get happier. best, Rhian
Okay, the 2CLF was known as the Argyll. Produced between 1988 and 1990. Previously, it had been known as the 2PE201. Can be seen in the catalogue archive:

Two-pocket binders appear in the catalogues between 1980 and 1987, but not a calf leather 2CLF. It's _possible_ that a 2CLF was produced in those years, but not featured in the catalogues.
It may also be worth checking if there is a 3-letter manufacturing code on the inside of the strap; this was introduced in 1989 (third letter 'A'), but it's not clear if this was applied to all production until later.
That sounds like a truly vintage model. Does it look like this? https://filowiki.robert-mayr.com/index.php?title=Argyll_2CLF_Personal

ReplyDeleteFabulous. It is indeed exactly this one https://filowiki.robert-mayr.com/index.php?title=Argyll_2CLF_Personal - Argyll 2CLF Personal in the colour that site calls burgundy. No markings on the inside of the strap. Happy to know its name and year. Many thanks to you all! Rhian
