Emerald Filofax Finsbury - by Anita

For those of you that have read my previous posts here, you'll know that I've owned many Filofaxes over the years. However, I realised that I've only had one Finsbury before, which was a mini that I used as a combined diary and wallet.

After my most recent clear out, I managed to pick up an emerald one on eBay for a cheap price as the listing clearly showed that it had some wear and tear. I should've taken some more before photos (sorry that this one's a bit blurry), but I was a bit too keen to start to give it some TLC.

Once I took it out of the packaging, it was clear that it had some issues:

  • Dry leather - after a clean with a damp cloth, I gave it a good polish with Lord Sheraton leather balsam.
  • Some minor surface rust on the rings and mechanism - I borrowed some metal polish, which hasn't completely removed it, but it's much better than it was. As the Finsbury's rings are riveted in, I couldn't remove them, so I used a cotton bud to get into as many areas as I could.
  • Loss of colour on the edges and corners - I was going to leave it as it was, but decided to see if I could find a cheap way to improve this. After a rummage, I found some gold nail polish, so added one coat along all of the edges, and then a second coat to the corners where most of the colour had gone.
  • Loss of colour on the front and back due to a couple of scuffs - once the edges and corners were done, the scuffs stood out more, so I used one of my Staedtler Triplus fineliners to add some colour. I wasn't looking to perfectly match it, but just to make them less obvious.
  • Zero flatability - once I'd removed the inserts that it came with, I was a bit shocked as the Finsbury snapped shut immediately! I was aware that it's a known problem with the model, but I suppose I've never experienced such poor flatability before. My mini one was second hand and already laid flat when I got it.

You can see rust marks on the material on the left hand side, which are better than they were with a clean, but wouldn't go completely.

Lack of flatability - first of all, I started gently rolling the leather like this.

I then worked my way up to bending the cover completely back like this.

And then left for a couple of days with an elastic band in place.

Some progress...

Finally! However, it does seem that if I don't use it for a while, it does start reverting and needs a not so gentle reminder to behave again.

Gold edges and corners - I was finding this hard to photograph, so this is the best that I managed. Before applying the nail polish, the corners had lost all of the emerald colour, so were grey.

I admit that this post in long overdue, as I bought the Finsbury in October 2023... Unfortunately in that time, I have found that it's been a bit of a constant battle with its lack of flatability, so it was recently donated to a charity table top sale.

Whilst I love the colour, I was just becoming more irritated with it after using my faithful Kensington!

Free For All Friday No 868 by Laurie

Something I resisted doing for a very long time was weekly reviews. I had read about how useful they could be, and tried a few times, but didn't like doing them mainly because I tended to be overly critical about myself.

A few months ago I tried again and this time something clicked. Instead of berating myself over what I didn't accomplish, I do short journaling entries about the things I'm working on or tried that week. I make sure to write what went well and what I've enjoyed, not just where I fell short.

I've found that weekly reviews really help keep me on track because a week is long enough to have some impact but short enough that if I get derailed I can adjust course quickly without letting things go too long.

I don't try to fit any pre-prescribed structure or answer specific questions. I just write about what is relevant to me right now. This flexibility has been key.

Some examples of what I write about in my week reviews:

How am I doing with my nutrition and exercise? Am I eating enough fruit/ veg? What's my sugar intake been this week? Am I getting enough cardio and strength training? How do I feel?

How is my planning system working for me? Is there anything I can tweak or change that would work better? What am I liking about my system?

How much time did I spend on social media? What can I do instead when I'm feeling lonely or bored?

What were my accomplishments this week? What did I enjoy?

What lessons can I carry over to next week, how to get back on track, things to try.

Do you do weekly reviews?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything ring binder organiser related!

Guest post series - 'Filohax' No. 20 - Paul

Thanks very much again to Paul for this twentieth instalment of his wonderful guest post series.
You can find all of the 'Filohax' posts here.

To mollycoddle or not to mollycoddle...

I have always been against mollycoddling binders, I love the patina that builds with use over time. And when I got my Kid leather Filofax Grosvenor 9 months ago, I initially just carried it in my backpack, along with everything else. However, before long I started to notice damage to the spine leather, where it meets the metal opener, so I wrapped it in a simple cloth to mitigate against further damage. It didn't really help that much and I noticed further damage.

Then while on holiday recently, browsing through a vintage and retro boutique, I spotted an old suede slip case - a typical 1950's unisex case for carrying all of the bits and bobs needed back in the analogue era (an era I would happily return to!).

For two British Pounds it was a no-brainer - I didn't even measure it - and it's turned into my Grosvenor's saviour. It looks too big for the job, but as it's not gusseted the bulk of the Grosvenor fills it out with room to spare for packs of inserts, pens etc.

I think I could throw the laden case on the ground and the Grosvenor would be fine.

Looking back through catalogues featuring the Grosvenor, it makes sense that it came new with its own felt carry case. You can see a photo of one of these protective felt pouches in Guest Post - Dust Bags by gmax

How do any Kid leather binder owners get around damage to this quite soft leather?

Filofax Westminster - Personal Size

It is a few years ago (2019) that I discovered the existence of the Filofax Westminster organisers. It only appears as far as I know in the 2001-2002 catalogue

It came as two combinations of A5+Slimline and Personal+Slimline.

Having discovered this unusual organiser I went on to try creating a modern day equivalent. I discovered that an A5 Holborn Zip would work with a Holborn Slimline.

It does give you a lot of possibilities and flexibility and as the catalogue suggests the main organiser can be used in the office, with the Slimline being perfect for carrying in your jacket pocket. The Personal + Slimline has the advantage of using the same paper size so you can easily swap pages between the two.

As I mentioned back in 2019, the only Westminsters I had seen sold on Ebay and similar sites were the main zip organiser, no mention was made of the Slimline in the adverts. Others reported seeing just the Slimline.

That was until last November when a Philofaxy reader advertised a Westminster Personal+Slimline, it was the first I had seen. As I was dedicated to using A5 this year I didn't immediately jump to buying it. But over six months passed and no one made an offer. After printing off my Personal size inserts for 2026 I thought hmm, I wonder!!

No it hadn't sold, we agreed a price and it was mine!

It is slightly taller than a normal Personal Zip, it needs to be to house the Slimline as well.

Unzipping it reveals a fairly simple interior

There are two full height vertical pockets, therefore you can slide in the Slimline on either side. Two pen loops and a set of 30mm rings.

By contrast the Slimline has small 11 mm rings, but it has a number of pockets to make up for the lack of pockets on the main organiser.

With my inserts put into both organisers there is a similar result to a Filofax Duplex, but with unequal size rings.

As I have been trying out different A5 organisers in my collection and then sharing a review/revisit post on the blog. I will no doubt be doing the same with Personal Size organisers, so no doubt the Westminster will see some action in future.

I might use the Holborn A5 and Holborn Slimline combination as we get close to the end of 2025 to allow for forthcoming appointments/tasks in 2025.
