Happy first day of August!
Recently I had a dream where I met two people, one of whom mentioned during the course of conversation that they use a Filofax. The other added that they too were a long-term Filofax user. I tried to be casual and not come on too strong about my Filofax enthusiasm (being keenly aware, even in my dream, that not all Filofax users are enthusiasts!). I told them about Philofaxy, and when one of them wondered about details of a particular model I mentioned they could probably find the details on FiloWiki.
It's rare I meet fellow Filofax users in real life, and when I do I take a cautious approach as I did in my dream, because if I open the floodgates and gush about Filofax I know it could put off someone who has just met me. Not everyone has such a love for them as I do!
Have you ever had a dream about your Filofax, or talking to people about Filofax? When you do meet a Filofax user, do you bond over your love of Filofax?
And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and or discuss anything Filofax related!
ReplyDeleteI once had a dream in which I owned a Lefax Charterhouse. It was so vivid that when I woke up and got ready for work I panicked when I couldn't find it. The sudden realisation of both relief and disappointment combined has remained with me to this day.
Hi everybody! For the start, never dreamed of filos yet :-)
ReplyDeleteBut would like to know how you manage your to-do-list. Since I left dailies for a wo2p vertical, I used them as my to-do-lists. Now I think about getting back to my to-do-inserts for a better long-time overview...
I like the Collins Notes inserts because they have a grey box on each line which I use for ticking off the to do. I don't use them for notes only todo lists.
DeleteA question to the experts about Filofax leather quality on the inside of the binders. I have a slim Guildford model and the leather on the inside of the cover has cracked to the extent that the top layer is flaking off. Underneath that the "leather" is powdery almost like you would find with PU fake leather. It's a genuine Filofax, with a Deluxe Leather stamp on the inside.
ReplyDeleteNow I notice my black Heritage is apparently starting to go the same way.
I am very careful with leather goods. I am used to maintaining them, and the process of looking after aging leather. Organisers from other manufacturers, Smythson, Mulberry etc have aged without deterioration.
What's the deal with Filofax? Is this a widespread issue or have I been unlucky with two binders?
Hi Nibscratcher! Although I'm no expert, I can at least tell you about my two Heritage personals, which also cracked after not too long of use.
DeleteThe inner spine material on many Filofaxes is not leather, but s synthetic of some sort. This goes back as far as early models such as the 3CL, witch used a leathercloth. The Guildford has a reputation for cracking and flaking (Flatability Neil goes on about it a lot) but there are other 'Deluxe Leather' binders with the same issue, such as the Belgravia.
DeleteI have nice suggested we collate reports on issues such as this; cracking/flaking synthetics, coated leathers, delaminating clasps, etc. but there may be too many variables to consider.
Thanks, Klaus, Kevin, you have confirmed my suspicions.
Deletecouple of blurry-eyed typo/autocorrects there...
Deletewitch -> which
nice -> once
I bought a personal week to view mid year Filofax insert directly from them. The hole spacing is different. It is slightly less spaced apart, and whilst the inserts still fit they "catch" as you turn them. There is a marked difference if I hold them against other filofax inserts.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if Filofax are changing their format?
That would be very unwise of them...
DeleteI recall reports of their custom inserts having poor hole placement, which made me wonder about their production process, and whether it might have been hived out to 'cottage industry'...
Mass production should not have hole space variation. I would want a replacement.
It depends on the process...
DeleteIf they use manufactured punching dies, the spacing is fixed, only the page offset can vary.
If they use paper drill machines with multiple single spindles, the setup can be off for each single hole.
If they use paper drill machines with special Triple-Drill heads, the groups of three can be off in respect to each other, but the spacing within the groups will be accurate.
If somebody decides to abuse a 4:1 pitch punching die, the spacing grid will be off, because 4:1 pitch uses 0.248" or 0.2475" instead of 0.25".

Yes, they _could_ be using badly set up, or inappropriate tooling. But that would be rather poor QA... And, even with declining standards, I'd like to think Filofax still have a _bit_ of pride in their product...
DeleteI'm looking at buying diary inserts for a potential new A5 Meeplus Slimpad with 16mm rings. The idea is to plan meetings so appointments with times from at least 7am weekdays. I am not sure how to achieve a good planner system with slim rings while still allowing for a bit of notepaper and information pages. I plan week by week but also monthly.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have a good idea what would work for me? It's the reduced sheet planner options that I'm not used to.
I'm looking for ideas and sources. Not sure filofax do anything suitable. A lot of b the Etsy sellers seem to be about the artsy or bullet journal tracker style. I'm purely business and efficiency.
Final Friday thought from me.
ReplyDeleteThe Pocket Sherwood arrived today. QA code CAG, so 1995. As with my other kid leather binders, it is lovely and supple (and evidently barely, if ever, used). Cleaned & conditioned, it now shines.
I do wish Filofax would make binders in this kid leather and 'silk' again, as they are beautifully compact, supple, but sturdy. Modern binders are so thick and 'brutal' by comparison, and I doubt the leathers used would be in this good condition 30 years from now. Filofax seem to think 'thick leather is good leather'. I disagree...
