  1. Hello everybody! A few questions I have, and perhaps someone here has some answers:

    * Kensington: Apparently, there are models with partial textile inside next to the spine and others with full leather. Are these different models or production years? Does this make a difference in quality?

    * Winchester 5CLF vs. 4CLF: Were these models produced concurrently, or was the 4CLF the successor? Is the same true for models with/without id slot and models with just one or both pockets gusseted?

Thanks in advance for any answers! :-)

    1. The names and new model designations were introduced in 1980. The Winchester 5CLF had previously been the E199 (between 1937 and 1979 at least).

The Winchester 4CLF with new pocket layout was introduced some time between 1981 and 1984; we only have the 1980 & 1984 catalogues.

This information is derived from the Philofaxy catalogue collection.

    2. As for the Kensington, it was introduced in 1999, and had disappeared by 2004. So a fairly short production run. The examples I've seen all have what appears to be leather on the inner spine. I say 'appears', because Filofax have a long history of using leather-effect materials on the inner spine, dating back to leathercloth on the pre-1980 binders (and even the 1980+ models such as 3CL).

    3. Kevin, thank you so much for your informative answers. I really appreciate it! I just ordered a Kensington on eBay, which apparently has fabric lining next to the spine. There are lots of little "f" logos on it. And hopefully, my first Winchester 5/4 will arrive soon from England. I'm so excited!

    4. I was going to suggest reviewing completed eBay sales, as that's a good way to get internal views.

Just done that, and found a completed sale in Sweden, with 'silk' lining. Interestingly, it also has quite rounded corners, and one characteristic feature of the Kensington is rather _square_ corners. It also appears to have a production code of EDI, which would put it at 1997. I wonder if earlier models didn't make it to the catalogues: we have no 1997 catalogue, but Kensington doesn't appear in the 1998 catalogue...

Do report back when it arrives.

    5. Kevin, I think you've found the one I bought! Didn't know that this particular one is from 1997. From filowiki I already knew that the first year of the Kensington should be 1999... Thanks for your efforts!

    7. That Swedish insert has the 'Established 1921' byline, which was introduced in 1996, on the 75th anniversary. So it cannot be older than 1996. I have heard of some unusual inserts available in Sweden (probably from 'This Bug's Life' Janet), in particular the teacher's inserts. So maybe they also had unique binders...

      Aha! Here we are:
