Filofax A5 Lockwood Zip - Revisited

It is several years since I got this organiser and reviewed it along side the Personal size zip. Just over 10 years ago in fact.  I will not repeat the detail that you will find in that review.

However, as part of my desire to use more of my A5 organisers I chose this one to start with, it is one of the few A5 Zip organisers that I own and the only one with 25mm rings the others are either bigger (Holborn zip -30mm) or smaller (Malden and Fusion iPad/Organisers 20mm)

As I commented with the original review the A5 zip lays totally flat, and the personal size zip is quite good too, and I would think it would improve with use.

In actual use I've found the pocket arrangements adequate for my needs. It has two elasticated pen loops one in the front the other at the back, so not lacking there either.

On the outside there is a slip pocket on the front and a zip pocket on the back cover, these can save you from having to unzip the organiser to place something inside or retrieve a slip of paper stored in one of these pockets.

The leather does show finger nail scratches, but these blemishes quickly disappear over time with a bit of TLC. It is a very smooth leather. It's too early to say if in constant use how it would stand up to daily use.

The outer zipper has a nice leather tab which works smoothly when closing the organiser and with my 'fill' of pages of a full 12-13 months of week on two pages and other home-printed inserts on 80gsm paper, (about 20mm thick) it closes just fine with no bulges or difficulty.

Being a zip closure does make the overall size of the organiser factionally bigger than a clasp closure organiser. But you do gain the extra protection/security of being an all around enclosed organiser.

I've not tried a clasp closure Lockwood, but I can recommend the A5 Lockwood Zip it is certainly a well made organiser and will serve most people well.

Have you ever tried a Lockwood?

  1. I have a pocket zipped organiser from a no name source. Bought for me when I was a kid and not really used. I have an A4 folio with a zip and I really like that too.

Last night I was doing my infrequent vinted filofax search and found a zipped A5 filofax Lyndhurst. I am tempted as it works out about £26 or £27. It is the Lyndhurst A5 zipped filofax. Now I have bought a few months back on vinted a mini Lyndhurst as I was tempted by the small. Now I am tempted by the large and the zipped. What are your views on this?

Lyndhurst is not one of the greats of the Filofax world and IIRC it comes from late 90s early 00s so people migbht expect a lower quality. I found the mini zipped I have is very soft leather, a sense it is thin leather, but it feels reasonable quality. Anyone own a Lyndhurst of any kind but especially this A5 zipped? What are your views on it as a model range, quality and for sub £30 is it a good used buy?

    1. The Lyndhurst appears to have been introduced in 2002, when it was on a cost par with the Kensington (oddly, relative prices swapped between pocket & personal models). The 2002 catalogue is rather light on leather details...

    2. My mini Lyndhurst says deluxe leather. No idea if that means anything to those more in the know.

I think it feels like thin leather and folding the inner pocket edge over it looks like a kind of fabric weave on the inside face. Could it be bonded leather? As in thin split leather bonded to a backing?

I only decided to get the mini one I have after watching a flatbility video in which he spoke highly about his pocket Lyndhursts. Well that and it was cheap!!

    3. I associate 'deluxe leather' with the peeling problems Neil reports on his Guildfords. There are a lot of weasel words describing the various 'leathers' use. Some are so heavily processed and coated, they are barely more than a cheap leather substrate, with some goop applied to colour or give "grain'.

Bonded leather generally refers to leather that has been broken down to a fibre level, then mixed with a synthetic binder; it's more like leather fibre reinforced plastic (vinyl?)

    4. Neil (flatability right?) has done videos of a postive nature on Lyndhurst. He seems to rate the ones he has owned. A4, A5, pocket and mini I think he has owned and shown on videos over the years. For some reason I think he likes his A4 and pocket / mini sizes but has sold on his A5.

One video he showed the flaking on another model of pocket or mini that flaked. Apparently he just picks it all off and carries on using them.In the same video he said that his lyndhursts are durable and haven't flaked at all. Others say they have a tendency to flake so it is possibly pot luck which quality you get. I have a seemingly good one in minii sized. I have bought an A5 one so hopeful on that one. My mini is nice.

  2. I love the Lockwood. It's probably my favorite of the current models. I have two personals: a crimson and a cognac zip, and a Navy A5. I like the pocket layouts a lot, and the colors in this line are just beautiful. The outer pocket is so handy when traveling.

  3. I notice that when I change my Filofax I reach for one of my two Lockwood personals more and more often. I like the Lockwood, maybe even a little better than my Maldens or my Holborn... A little less playful than the Malden, a little tidier than the Holborn... Although a zipper is out of the question for me.

  4. Thank you for your revisited post. I haven't tried a Lockwood, but I do like the look of them. I think I probably would've bought one if I wasn't so smitten with my Kensington.

  5. I have a Lockwood A5 in tan leather for my "work" Filofax. I like it a lot because of the size, flatability and quality of the leather. It fits my needs well and feels like a quality product that will stand the test of time and use. I point friends to the Lockwood when anyone says that Filofax no longer make good Filofaxes. I now want one in personal size, zipped and red as I like the Lockwood that much.
