Free for All Friday No. 840 by Nan

In many parts of the world, the winter holiday season is already under way. Even if you don't celebrate a religious holiday, the holiday season poses certain challenges. A change in weather conditions, increased traffic, events to attend, visitors to entertain, and so on.

How do you handle the changes? Do you have a separate holiday organizer or journal? Do you add a holiday section or a few extra pages?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything related to ring-bound organizers!

  2. Since it's approaching that time of year when people might be considering printing inserts, from various sources, here's something I found recently.

One regular question is 'how can I print PDF pages efficiently on an A4 printer?'. Well, all my PostScript insert generation is intended to be used with my custom page imposition scripts that do this, but I also created an insert booklet in LibreOffice, using a Personal page size. I could not use my imposition scripts on this, as I had no control over the generated PostScript. I did manage to use Acrobat's booklet print option to get two pages per A4 sheet, but not three.

So I recently searched for free PDF imposition software, and found Montax Imposer, which is free to use for up to 4 pages per side of an A4 sheet.

It's a bit fierce to configure correctly, since it has many configuration parameters, but, once configured, it seems to do a pretty good job of imposing 3 Personal pages on each side of A4, with double-sided printing. Once you get the configuration sorted, you can save it as a template for future use.

Pages can be imposed in 'cut and stack' mode, where pages are ordered and imposed so that you simply have to separate and stack the three piles of pages (my imposition scripts do this, too). This is intended for use with a big guillotine that allows the entire document to be cut in one go; those using smaller cutters will have to think a bit harder about making sure the separated pages are stacked correctly.

  3. I use the standard Filofax Personal Week-per-page diary. As soon as I insert the next year, I use a purple highlighter to mark all of the Bank Holidays. I then use a Filofax Planning Stencil (SKU: 132780) to draw a small warning triangle in pencil on the outside edge of each day that the schools are on holiday. This serves as a warning for when places may be busy and possibly be more expensive so I can book my own holidays when th schools are back

    1. Robert, this is a great idea, thank you! (My youngest is in college now, so I’m always getting caught off-guard on the non-school days :)
