Free For All Friday - No. 841 - Steve

The podcast is returning... after a prolonged 2 year break we are back.

Karine and I managed to synchronise our schedules and get a suitable time to record episode 134.

Life basically just got in the way. Karine has moved house twice and not short moves either, so we have just been patient and carried on as best we can until the time was right to start again.

Refreshed and hopefully with some new ideas, although we are always open to new ideas of course.

At the time of writing, I've managed to edit/mix the recordings, the software I use has gone through a few changes since I last used it so there was a bit of a learning curve!!

The episode will be released next week. If you haven't listened to the podcast before, with 133 episodes already released and each one is about 30 minutes, there should be a topic of interest in some of them.

Of course it is Friday, so please feel free to discuss anything Filofax related.

  2. I will seek the podcast out, especially past output to hear what is is all about. Must admit I am not a big podcast listener but I might change that in the new year on my train journeys into work.

I have a quick question about 90s filofaxes. It seems to me that the bigger sizes of models that came out in the 90s had slots for cards but also floppy discs. Anyone know when these came in and disappeared? Also, when they started or got dropped is it possible to get one model with the floppy disc slots and another of the same model with them replaced or were these slots brought in and dropped with the models that had them?

I am getting an A5 Lyndhurst that AIUI has floppy disc slots so I am curious. Also curious what people would use these for. I am guessing notelets, postits, filofax postits sets, odd small note folded up for temporary storage, etc. I can't think of any single item/object that could be considered to have taken over the floppy disc for these slots, not like you could fit external hard drives in there for certain.

  4. Today has been diary printing, cropping & punching day. Well, some of it, anyway...

I had been thinking of colouring the seasons accordingly (blue for winter, green for spring, warm yellow for summer & reddy brown for autumn), but was persuaded during last weekend's telecon to think about a gradual colour change. So, after a bit of pondering, I've done this, using the week to determine the hue (using HSB colour space in PostScript). This has been applied to my year calendar, month on 1 page and week on two pages scripts, to colour month/week/day header, weekend, watermark & text (all the same hue, but different saturation & brightness). I liked it enough that I printed the calendar, mo1p and first four months of wo2p, and cropped & punched them, ready for the start of next year.

The other thing I have been playing with is a genuine 'frankenplanner' duplex binder, made from two rather tatty Domino binders I picked up on eBay. Cutting half of each 'back' off revealed the rather cheap, laminated construction; a thin plastic outer layer, two thin layers of cardboard, and a synthetic fabric 'suede' inner face. My dovetail joint hasn't been entirely successful, so I might end up cutting out a strip of the outer layers, and gluing a cardboard 'patch' across each gap to stabilise.

But, even with this crude joint as it is, the duplex binder seems to work quite well, and holds more inserts in a smaller volume with the two sets of rings than simply using a single binder with a bigger set of rings. I'm encouraged to continue with this experiment...

  8. Steve, I'm ecstatic to hear you and Karine again! I was thinking of you two having a Wonderful Catch-Up session and how your planners have been great tools through the various iterations. The Team is Back!!! -Jessie, Stateside, Pittsburgh PA
