Whilst doing some decluttering the other week, I came across some very old notes from when I used to have a yearly work appraisal. I'd joined a newly created team at the time, so our wonderful supervisor was trying out the Stop, Start, Continue feedback method to help us improve how we worked together. As we were dealing with both a new project and a new team, I definitely felt that the method helped us with implementing the work and also getting to know each other.
Until I came across those notes, unsurprisingly it's not something I've thought about for a long time, but it occurred to me that I could use stop, start and continue lists in my Filofax to help me identify what is working, and what could be improved or changed. The more I think about it, I think they could be very helpful to me in lots of different ways:
- At the beginning of a year, instead of New Years resolutions.
- Updated and/or reviewed on a monthly basis - I've found over time that a monthly review works best for me.
- To help with a specific project or area of life.
- On an adhoc basis, if I'm feeling overwhelmed and want to make a quick decision about what to focus on.
Have you tried something like this before in your planner, and if so, has it worked for you?
And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related. I hope that you have a great weekend.
A visit to yesterday's post and the Adspot led me down an alleyway into DUplex and Westminster binders. Those are where a zipped one has a slimline one inside which has no clasp. This led me to thinking about my current work daily carry. An A5 Lyndhurst zipped binder. I use it just for work and with a Clairfontaine A5 notebook, I love the quality of Clairfontaine paper even though I do not like their notebooks with the soft cover and inability to get them to layflat without rough handling.
ReplyDeleteAnyway a month into using this binder with notebook this week I started to put my notebook into my Lyndhurst. It is my version of duplex as a notebook is handy to carry around to meetings or just in case. When moving between buildings on site I can shove the notebook into an inside pocket of my work jacket (branded fleece).
Anyway that got me into thinking whether I could make it a binder based duplex. I have a mini lyndhurst too so perhaps that could be my duplex insied binder. I currently carry that as a small diary on work days anyway.
Does anyone have suggestions for binders that would work together in the Duplex way? I have the Lyndhurst A5 zipped so anything would work with that? I also have a clasp closed Finsbury A5, could I do it with that as I think that has more space inside it?
What would you recommend to use with those two A5? I would not have the spare cash to go out and buy much or buy a whole new set of two binders so any ideas for on the cheap duplex systems? Without a good idea I think the notebook and Lyndhurst is my best option.
For traveling, I use a personal zipped cognac Lockwood. The outer pocket is the perfect size for Field Notes. As much as I would love to journal in a Filofax, I just can't do it. I need something that will lay flat with no rings in the way. So the Filofax has the information I need to travel, and the Field Notes tracks my adventures. A nice pair.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a Filofax with a travellers notebook might make a good combo??
DeleteAt the moment I'm having a hard time combining my personal Filofax for home use with an A5 for work. I'm having problems with the to-do lists in the two Filofaxes (where was what?) and with the question of whether I should have my work calendar in A5 format or in the personal calendar. I can't imagine having everything in one place as A5 would be too big for long term use and a personal for everything too small. And in fact, a notebook is often more comfortable to write on because it doesn't have rings. So I always remain loyal to my personal filofax, but my A5 ones get exchanged every once in a while for notebooks. Maybe I should also mention here that my zodiac sign is Libra. And she's not famous for her determination ;-) Are you experiencing the same? Did you findy any solution?
ReplyDeleteBack in 2012 I decided to try and get organised. So I went out and bought a leuchtturm bullet journal and a metropol personal organiser. It was a total whim to get both as I was really only going in to look for a nice diary. A bit extravagant as the plan was to run two systems at the same time. A fillofax in trad style and a bullet journal. I found the FF was left at home and was my personall planner and password holder. Any time I needed to make a call to a utility or other service provider I sat there with my personal Metropol to hand with a note page ready. It ended up not leaving my house. The bullet journal got used at work and was perfect for that. Later on I kind of half bullet journalled and mostly rapid logged instead.
DeleteAnyway I got bored of bullet journal and after aa few alternative ways of doing it such as a travellers notebook I looked into other things. About that time I had started at a new company where a filofax was accepted. My old place was known as being old fashioned in the planning side. Old schoo! So I decided to treat myself and got a personal holborn. That became my work filofax. I used it several months and loved it but it was too small and taking pages out to write on the wrong side was not practical. So I found an A5. That worked very well, but it got way to beefy and stuffed. It got to avbout 2kg in weight and filled my computer bag too much. I ended up using a drybag style rucksack that was bigger instead.
That kind of didn't work so I used my personal holborn as a on site binder and my A5 finsbury at home. I got used to syncing them both. That lasted about 6 months then I decided to look for a pocket for travel to site but got a mini lyndhurst instead. I bought it thinking it was pocket as the images looked 6 ring and the seller thought it was then told me after I had boighjt it that it had 5 not 6 rings. An honest mistake I think. I was happy with it but went back to personal for on site and A5 at home.
More recently I got an A5 lyndhurst. I took out less of my A5 pages as a minimalist A5 and that is my current work site binder. That makes it light enoug to use now. I also have a lyndhurst mini as a quick ref diary.
I like the two whatever system, duplex if you like as I am used to having two binder / notebook system and syncing them. However I still do not have it sorted out for me yet. Perhaps Westminster in A5 might do it, perhaps personal. I do not know whether I would like the inner second binder. It does not look that nice in the photos I have seen.
The westminster looked
Thanks for sharing your story, Paul. Really encouraging! Perhaps I should trust myself a bit more when syncing my filofaxes…
