Free For All Friday No 521 by Laurie

How often do you open the rings on your Filofax? The best answer would be: as little as possible. Every time I open the rings I'm aware that it's causing some degree of wear and tear.

In reality, I'm sure the rings can withstand years of opening and shutting. But I still try to open them only when I need to. I suppose I open the rings a few times per week when moving pages around or adding a notes page here and there.

I know there are people who open the rings and remove the page every time they write, because the rings get in the way of writing. Personally I don't have the patience to do that, never mind what it might do to the rings!

How often do you open the rings on your Filofax?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything ring binder organizer related!

  1. Like you, as little as possible...

  2. I hardly ever open the rings. Not more than 3 or 4 times a year. Let me explain. I change the diary inserts once a year and I check all the other pages at the same occasion. Pages I don't need anymore get destroyed, the ones that I need to keep get stored in a storing binder. Then during the year when a page is no longer needed (lists, old projects I don't need to keep etc) I just tear and destroy it. If I need to move pages around (mostly project info or schedule) then I slit the holes open so those pages can be moved around as often as I want. The only pages I keep permanently in my planner are the diary, contacts, admin & finance info and some lists.
I have been in the same two planners since the 80s and their rings are still as good as new.

  3. I’m forever taking pages out to write - especially Pocket size. Being left-handed means the rings are always in the way on a clean sheet. Yes, when I’ve turned over, it’s ok, but many leaves are only written on the first side.

    1. Understand, Tim, I'm a lefty too....

This is one reason why I have returned to A5 after periodic attempts to use a smaller size binder.

Other reason, is that I like to take lots of notes; meetings, task tracking, etc.

Much as I like idea of carrying around a smaller binder, I end up frustrated after a little while.

      So it goes...
