  1. Was A5 Malden ever produced in black?

    1. Sadly not... Ochre, Vintage Pink, Grey, Purple, Aqua. But never in Crimson or Black.

  2. I'm looking for the thinnest A5 Filofax I can get, preferably one that is actually available to buy easily. I've looked at the Aston as a possibility as the Boston has 20mm rings but is very padded, and I don't like the finish on the Luxe. Any suggestions?

    1. Paul - lots of us have been waiting for many years for such an organiser! All the recent models with 20mm rings have been padded and/or designed for the cat walk (and marketed as such). The 20mm Malden in the iPad cover would be great if it didn't have a plastic back cover. There was an A5 Executive model with 19mm rings until around 2003. I've hunted high and low but never found one. In the end I made my own slimline A5 using a Flex cover and 13mm rings.

    2. If you can find an A5 Portobello you might find that fits the bill. Mine was NOS from an eBay seller, has 19mm or 20mm rings and has very little padding. It also opens flat as a bat straight out of the box. The leather is slightly textured but it's an inoffensive sort of fine crosshatching pattern. The downside is that they're no longer made, but you could try sending eBay seller 'bouteia' a message and ask if they have another one?

    3. Tim - A5 Flex cover and 13mm rings? Can you expand on that?

    4. Tim is referring to his Flex with rings:

    5. Charles - I was hoping that it might inspire Filofax to produce a genuine slim A5, or even convert some of their mountains of unsold First Edition Flexes. But, alas...

  3. Is there a resource to show what years the individual models were made available and/or discontinued?

    1. I don't know of any place that tells of old Filofax models. That would be great. If there was a Filofax "museum" website that would be really cool. I have some old Personal and Pocket College Organizers. I think they made them sometime in the 90s. I don't know when they were discontinued. I wish they were still around.

  4. I would like to know if anyone has issues with the binder rings getting in the way. I'm using a Day Timer Desk planner (comparable to A5) which has 1 1/2 inch rings. I'm right handed and the rings bother me when I write on the page to the left of the rings. Do smaller rings make any difference? I would love to get a Filofax at some point but hesitate to spend the money if the smaller rings will still be an issue to me.

    1. The rings do get in the way sometimes. The bigger the rings, the more they get in the way. I personally think smaller rings do help but you might miss the extra room the bigger rings provide. Maybe you could find a cheaper binder to try out before you invest in a better one.

  5. If my math is correct, and if FFAT has happened every week since it was started, This should mark the end of three years of FFAT (156/52 = 3) so that next week's FFAT would be the 3rd anniversary!

    1. Yes the first one was 8th Feb 2011, but there was one on the Wednesday before that! Wondering Wednesdays...

Free For All Fridays aren't quite so regimented because the earlier ones of these were not every Friday it's only in the last few years that have they have become every week!

  7. The pen loop on my Buckingham is ripped. I read somewhere on this blog about penholders that can be stuck on the edge of a flyleaf or divider. Can shoreline point me in the right direction, please? Cheers

    1. Leuchtturm Pen Loop. I think they sell them at Dodopad.com or check eBay.

    2. I think Staples has them, too, if you're in the US.

  8. I'm new to this whole Filofax world, and I even feel silly for asking (but i really have NO idea) so here are my questions:

Is there really a Filofax Mode organizer (in Personal size)? I'm asking because I'm not sure if it's discontinued or never even existed. I've seen pictures & only 1 video of it on the internet but not sure if it's just a fake using the Filofax brand to lure in newbies like myself into buying one.

Also, are there any other stores/sellers that sell Filofax organizers besides the Filofax company? Would you recommend any? & What are any differences if any between buying from other stores & the Filofax company?

Thanks in advance! (apologies for any inconvenience)

    1. The Mode is a real Filofax product, but isn't one of the more popular models. I think it would be good for a first Filofax or child's Filofax, though.

If you're looking for retailer recommendations, it would help to know which part of the world you're in.

    2. The Mode was discontinued several years ago but you might be able to find one on ebay.

    4. I have a personal sized black-and-blue Mode that I'm selling. They're discontinued but still available sometimes in Australia (where I live).

  10. How do people write in their Filofax Personal and Pocket. I have both of these and am right handed and face problems writing in there. Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions? Would be a great help before I decide to throw in the towel.

    1. Make sure the pages you write on the most (probably the diary) are in the middle of the organiser, not the very beginning. And the pages that only carry information but you don't write on them or not very often at the very beginning. The result should be that the left pages you write on are more elevated, therefore, the rings should be less trouble.
You might also want to consider how big are the rings in filofax. If they are too big and you don't put enough stuff inside to elevate the pages, it might be better to get organiser with smaller ring diametre (Compact or even Slimline instead of Personal, in case of Pocket, you need to check the specs).
      Hope it helps.
