Free For All Friday No. 847 by Eve

Are you a messy planner or a pretty planner? As I was working in my Filofax this morning I chucked at the thought of how perfectly it works to keep me organized, but how someone else might need a decoder ring to make any sense of it, because my planner is very much like my life....messy.

I started planning back in the 1980's.  Day planners at that time were thought of as more of a productivity tool or compilation of information, and it never occurred to me to use it as anything else. My first Filofax was essentially a calendar with my schedule and my address book.

Fast forward to today and some of you share beautifully crafted spreads and have handwriting I could only dream of! Seasonal dashboards, pretty velum, pocket deco, sticker kits and the like are all over social media. The term "planning" has evolved to include more creative expression.

"Functional" means different things to different people; some people need more of a pleasing aesthetic in order to feel their planner works for them, others just need some empty space on a page and whatever pen is within reach.

So tell me...is your planner messy or pretty?

Filofax A5 Belmont - Review/Revisited.

Continuing the revisiting of the A5 organisers in my 'collection' and putting them to use for 2-4 weeks at a time, at the start of this month (January 2025) I moved in to my A5 Belmont.

When it came to writing this post I realised that I hadn't featured this particular organiser in any posts. I have done a couple of posts about the Personal Size Belmont and you will find those here

There isn't a massive difference in the design between the two sizes.  The two sizes look very similar in the details.

The clasp features a double row of stitching.

This continues around to the back of the organiser with a ornate pattern.

The spine also has the same double row of stitches as the Personal Size.

A close up of the rear of the clasp attachment.

The front interior features a pen loop and several card slots. The front pen loop is larger than the rear pen loop which isn't uncommon with a few Filofax A5 organisers. Hence why my chunky pen is on the front loop.

The A5 Belmont comes with 30mm rings of a standard Krause design, i.e. not riveted. The inside back cover has a notepad slot and just a smaller pen loop.

The front cover features a double press stud design to give you a bit of extra capacity if you require it.

The Belmont range were sold around about 2004-2006 in tan as shown here and in black, both with contrasting stitching.

I've enjoyed using the Belmont these last few weeks, but it is time to move on to another A5 in the collection, I've not decided which one yet.

Looking after your personal organiser

Now is as good a time as any to give your organiser a little T.L.C. I tend to do this at least once a year or when I'm swapping from one organiser to another one for a bit of variety.

Step 1. - Remove all of the inserts and dividers and contents of the pockets. Put them to one side for now.

Step 2. - Inspect the rings, checking for gaps. Open and close them a few times. Give them a light polish with a micro-fibre cloth, this will remove any dirt and grime and make them look like new again.

Step 3. - Use a  small soft bristle paint brush to dust the interior of the organiser. The brush will reach in to all the nooks and crannies and remove any build up of paper dust that seems to come off of cut/punched paper.

Step 4. - If the organiser is leather, consider giving it some leather cleaner/balm treatment. Use it sparingly though, don't use too much. Again use a micro-fibre cloth to buff the finish to a pleasant shine. Always read the instructions first.

For simulated leather organisers give them a wipe with alcohol-free baby wipes. The cloth sections on the interior can be gently cleaned with small amount of fabric or upholstery cleaner. Test any products first on an inconspicuous area.

Leave it open to breath after the treatment.

Step 5. Turning to the inserts. Go through them and see if there are any pages that need archiving or updating. Check the paperwork and accessories you have been carrying too.

Check that the pens aren't about to run out of ink, also check them for internal leaks too.

Enjoy the process.

Free For All Friday - No. 846 by Anita

Whilst looking at some of my older posts, it got me to thinking about why I purchased my first Filofax back in 2009. Back then, I'd recently read David Allen's Getting Things Done book and realised that a Filofax would be the perfect place to house my GTD set up in. Prior to this, I had two or three notebooks on the go, and was starting to feel overwhelmed, and I knew that there had to be a better way for me.

So, has using a Filofax achieved what I had hoped it would since then? Thankfully, I can answer this with a resounding, "Yes!" I previously mentioned that I'd been gradually moving away from Getting Things Done, but it does work for me, so I've actually returned to the set up for this year.

I have also found that regularly using an organiser has helped to improve my mental health, and using one proved to be invaluable when I was my late Mum's main caregiver.

Has using a Filofax so far lived up to what you hoped it would do for you?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related. I hope that you have a great weekend.

Goals vs Habits And a Check In on Both

Reality Check: How are you doing on your goals and habits as January comes to a close?

They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. I don't know if I agree with that - certainly three weeks is a good start to get a new habit rolling, but I know I personally need a lot longer to make changes that really stick.

Goals and habits seem very similar, and both certainly are aimed at driving personal progress, but they play different roles:

Goals are specific achievements you aim for within a set timeframe, for example, "I will lose 10 pounds in 3 months" or "I will save up $5,000 by the end of 2025". Goals provide direction and motivation, serving as the what and why of your progress. Goals are results-oriented and time-bound.

Habits, on the other hand, are behaviors or routines that you incorporate into your daily life, like exercising each day or saving a portion of each paycheck. Habits focus on the how, helping you build a sustainable process that supports long-term success. Habits are process-driven and ongoing.

The most effective approach is to set clear goals and then break them down into bite-sized, actionable habits, and of course to track your progress in your planner so you can make adjustments as needed.

My main goals this year are health-related. Midway through 2024 I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic so one of my big goals is to get my blood sugar under control by the time I'm due for my next lab tests. Habits which support that goal consist of all kinds of lifestyle changes. I've been using a few of the newer Filofax Lifestyle refills to track these changes, particularly the Wellness Tracker and Meal Planner inserts.

My tabs, including "Wellness"

Weekly Menu Planner

Back of Menu Planner has Shopping List, Wellness Tracker on Right

What goals did you set for yourself for 2025? Were there any habits that you decided to break? Any new habits that you've set out to incorporate into your life?

How do you track your goals and habits in your planner?
