Planners and Planner Inserts for 2015

Today I'm bringing the community 'big guns' together to share with you what they all have to offer for the New Year. Unusually for Philofaxy we are going to feature non-ring bound solutions as well as ring bound. I realise some of us (myself included) use both formats.

We lead off with Laurie

Plannerisms - Laurie

After many years of trying and reviewing hundreds of planners on her blog Plannerisms.com, Laurie never found the planner she was looking for so she created it!

The Plannerisms planner is designed to help you incorporate your goals into your daily schedule. Its flexible format can be used any way you like. Monthly pages, weekly pages and goals pages throughout the book allow you to track your goals quickly and easily.

See the big picture on the monthly pages, and plan the details on the weekly pages. Write your daily intentions and check them off without rewriting them each day.

The Plannerisms planner lets you focus on what’s important in YOUR life, and helps you get where you want to go in life and in the world. The Plannerisms Going Places planner is available on the Collins UK website for worldwide shipping.

My Last Eureka - Diana

The blog www.mylasteureka.com was born in 2014 after a time e task management workshop that Diana followed at the University of Münster. Diana likes to play with time management systems and come up with some small ‘eureka’ moments that she distributes as freebies on her site. A small shop is connected to the site and gives the followers the possibility to purchase the printed inserts. In the picture you can see the first template draw by Diana. The Daydex.

The Daydex is a handy customizable powerful time management system available in different templates for Filofax, Midori and Moleskine planners. Check her site for details.

Lime Tree Fruits - Raine

LimeTreeFruits Planners was created to bring back the FUN in organizing and planning your days. A while back Raine {the creator} was minding her own business, trying to get thru her first semester of an MBA program while maintaining sanity through the transition into a new job. The ducks weren’t really in a row so she decided to research a game plan for the new semester and the new year approaching. Her reliable friend “google” pointed her to an intriguing and appealing little tool: A good ol’ Filofax. Soon it became way more than “just” a planner. It turned into a real tool to unleash her creativity.

Tired of the endless search of fun and exciting planner pages she decided to unpack her brushes and create those missing pages herself. And that is how LimeTreeFruits Planners were born. It started with one single design of a monthly planner and over the years developed into a full package of 150+ illustrated pages to make life organized and manageable while having FUN along the way.

Whether you are using them to help you be on top of tasks at home or at work, LimeTreeFruits Planners are sure to bring you a smile {and some giggles!} as you go through each colorful month {and weeks, and days, and all sorts of extra fun pages! :) }
You can find more about those juicy smile-inducive planners at www.limetreefruits.com/planners-2015

I know there are plenty of others out there. So a quick mention here for some we are familiar with.
There is also of course Philofaxy, as you know Ray and I share in the development and creation of a large range of inserts. You will find them on the Diary Inserts page.

We have also created a wide variety of files for other non-diary inserts. Please take a look on our Files page and there might be something you can download and adapt to your needs.

Thank you for all of the contributions from our fellow planner and insert creators.

Reader Under the Spotlight - Matthew

Today I would like to introduce you to Matthew

About Me!
Hello, my name is Matthew and I am currently in my second year of university studying Drama and English Literature in the UK. 'Filofax' has been a big part of my home, but mainly academic life, keeping my organised and on top of my studies  I have been following Philofaxy for many years now and decided it was about time I did a ‘Reader Under the Spot Light’.  I have started my own blog ‘My Filofax Fixation’, in the hope of giving other students and those who lead a hectic lifestyle, some tips and inspiration for staying organised.

1. When did you buy your first organiser and what was it?

I bought my first Filofax in 2007. It was a Cross (now named the Classic) A5 in the Pistachio colour - I loved the smooth Italian leather.

2. What other brands have you used or considered using?

I have considered using Franklin Covey, however I have always preferred Filofax! In my opinion, they have always done a fantastic selection of organisers and a wide variety of inserts.

3.  Out of the organisers you own which is your current favourite (Style and Size)?

I have had many Filofax’s over the years, however my favourite has to be my Aqua Malden in the Personal size! The leather feels beautiful and the aqua colour is superb!

4. How many Filofax or other brands of organisers do you own?

I have recently sold many of my Filofax’s, in which I had 15 Filofax’s, I now own the following:
  • Aqua Malden in Personal size
  • Crimson Malden in Personal size
  • Purple Malden in the Pocket Size
  • A5 Cross/Classic in Pistachio
5. What is the oldest organiser in your collection?

Filofax Cross A5 in Pistachio, which was only available in 2005/2006

6. What do you use your organisers for?
  • Aqua Malden in Personal size – my current organizer, which I use for both academic and home use.
  • Crimson Malden in Personal size – currently used as a storage binder
  • Purple Malden in the Pocket Size – used for a variety of notes, shopping lists etc.
  • 5 Cross/Classic in Pistachio – used as a storage binder
7. What was the feature about Filofax you like most?

I love the ability to change the layout of the Filofax to suit my needs! For example in the autumn and spring semester I use a week on two pages format. However during exam term, I use a day to a page format to allow in-depth revision planning.

8. If you could design your own Filofax what would it feature?

If I could design a Filofax, I would take the existing Malden and add two pen loops to the personal size instead of one! I would also make the pen loops larger, as I have great difficulty fitting my pens into the Malden Filofax. I would love to bring out more colour options other than Ochre and Purple, such as something similar to the aqua and crimson!

9. How do you carry your Filofax?

I sometimes carry my Filofax around university in my laptop bag! My personal Malden fits in there very nice and snug. However, the majority of the time I love walking around and holding my Filofax……it gets a lot of interest and comments from fellow students.

10. Which Filofax in the current range do you like the most? Are you going to buy it?

I like the look of the Charleston in the purple colour, however I still prefer the look of the Malden range.

11. What is the most you have ever spent on a Filofax or other brand of organiser? Which model?

I have recently purchased a Personal size Malden in Aqua from Germany. It cost £100 – but it was so worth it!

12. What's your favourite Filofax tip or hack?

I love the Dashboard concept. I have mine at the front of my Filofax, containing to do lists, reminders and important dates.

13. Turning to Philofaxy, what do you like the most?

I love how everyone is so friendly! Also I really enjoy looking at everyone's Filofax's and their setups! I find it very interesting

14. And what do you not like about Philofaxy?

It would be great to have more opportunities to attend Philofaxy meet ups

15. What was the last music track you downloaded or bought?

Santa Clause is Coming to Town by Mariah Carey

16. Have you ever attended a Philofaxy meet-up? if not do you intend to one day?

I have not yet attended one yet but I would absolutely love to.

17. What was the last movie you watched?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

18. What was the last book you read?

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway

Thank you Matthew. As you know we are always looking for new people to appear in our 'Reader Under Spotlight feature, please contact Steve philofaxy at gmail dot com

Free For All Friday No. 319 by Anita

I hope that you had a lovely day yesterday and I'd like to wish you all a happy New Year.
We've had some Terry Pratchett Christmas cards for ages, so I couldn't resist having a festive picture to look at when I open up my Kensington.

Did you get a binder for Christmas, or anything for your Filofax?
I didn't as I'm in the process of selling binders that I'm not using and feel pretty content with my current set up.

But since it's Friday, all topics are welcome!

25 December 2014

Merry Christmas

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2015.

I would also like to thank all of our supporters.

  • Gillio Firenze - For sharing their news and letting me review their wonderful products, and the great trip to Italy earlier this year.

Guest Post: Filofax Surgery - Kate

Thank you to Kate for sharing this post with us. When I saw the email come in I wondered 'what has Kate been doing now!!!' There is a happy ending though!

Hi everyone!!
Thank you to Steve for allowing me to do this guest post!

Most of us are in search of the perfect binder. Many of the binders out there can be almost perfect- beautiful leather, the colour, the ideal ring mechanism size, etc. However, one thing may stop a binder being 100% perfect, such as an interior pocket layout which doesn’t meet your needs.

But many of us don’t have the money to buy a new one just because the one we have doesn’t have the perfect pocket layout. So how can you modify a binder to make it more perfect for you? (Answer: Carefully!!)

I have been looking at the Van der Spek Touch Me A5/Manager binders for a couple of months now, specifically for one of my work binders (not my day-job, but my independent academic research).

The Touch Me binders have amazing pockets, which is very tempting (see this blog post by Janet!). I did a quasi-scientific analysis of which pockets I really need in an A5 binder, and I worked out that I need one secretarial pocket which would accommodate A5 paper and some credit card pockets which would hold 3x3 inch sticky notes. Any other pockets would be a bonus.

What I did realise, however, is that most of the generous pockets in a Touch Me binder would go unused. In an effort to save money, I decided to employ one of my currently-owned binders- my A5 Brown Kendal.

On the left interior cover, the A5 Kendal has one full-length slip pocket and 6 credit card pockets.

The openings of these credit card pockets are designed to fit the slim side of a credit/business card, and so won’t fit the larger (3x3 inch) sticky notes that I need. I also find it difficult to slip paper into the full-length slip pocket without making the edges scruffy or the corners dog-eared.

Left interior layout of the Kendal

WARNING!! The rest of this post isn’t for the faint-hearted!

I realised that it would be quite easy (if not a bit scary!) to modify the pockets of the Kendal to become the secretarial pocket and credit card pockets that I need. And yes- this surgery would involve a scalpel!!

Using my metal ruler and my sharp craft knife on top of my cutting mat, I was able to do some cosmetic surgery to cut an extra opening on the slip pocket and three of the credit card pockets.

By carefully slicing along the top edge of the slip pocket, taking care to get all the way through the leather and the lining, but not to cut into the front cover of the binder, I was able to create a secretarial pocket.

This is only a small modification, as a secretarial pocket is a pocket with openings on two sides instead of one side like a slip pocket, so it was easy to do.

Secretarial Pocket
I held my metal ruler pressed against the leather exactly where I wanted the cut to go. I didn’t cut too closely to the stitching to make sure that the rest of the leather didn’t detach from the binder where it was sewn.

I used smooth, evenly-pressured, confident but careful movements with the knife along the ruler to steadily get through the leather, instead of pressing heavily on the blade in imprecise movements that could create a scruffy or jagged edge on the leather. It was difficult to tell if I was all the way through the leather, or if I was accidentally cutting the front cover underneath, so I placed a piece of paper folded several times inside the pocket so that I could pull it out every so often to see if I had got through the leather, and to make sure I hadn’t gone through too far.

Once I had finished cutting, I saw that there could be two problems- I had cut through the stitching on the edge of the slip pocket, which could then start to become unravelled, and also the inner cloth lining of the pockets which is usually held against the leather by the stitching would now be loose. In theory, you could cut the lining away, but I decided not to.

I solved both problems (hopefully permanently) by using fabric glue- I put some over the stitching where I had cut, and some along the inside of the inner lining to glue it against the leather. The ‘Wash and Wear Glue’ I used dries clear, so you won’t be able to see it.

I used the same techniques to modify the credit card pockets.

Effectively, the credit card pockets are now like mini-secretarial pockets. I will definitely be able to fit my sticky notes in there, and whatever else I’d like to store in there. Importantly, with the Kendal, I still have the 3 underneath credit card pockets left if I ever need to store things such as business cards.

So there we go! My modified pocket layout in my A5 Brown Kendal! This will serve me well for its purpose!

I suggest you really think hard about doing anything like this to your binder. These are permanent changes that can’t be undone. Make sure the modifications you want to make are a good idea before you do them. Chances are that you wouldn’t be able to sell your binder for anything like retail price if you decided to sell it in the future, and you wouldn’t be able to return the binder if something became faulty e.g. the ring mechanism.

Only do this if you are confident with your skill. Be very careful, not only with making sure you don’t cut yourself, but making sure that you don’t make a mistake.

Make sure you have the correct tools- a sharp, not blunt, craft knife; a metal ruler not a plastic one; and a cutting mat.

Thank you Kate.

Reader Under the Spotlight - Becky

Today I would like to introduce you to Becky.

Hi there. I'm an international communications student living British Columbia with my husband and our two dogs.

I have held an odd compulsion to hoard notebooks and office supplies since I was a child. I like to think I take after my mom because she has used a planner forever and she maintains this magnificent library of binders that I didn't appreciate until recently.

Becky blogs over at Becky's Paper Route

Thanks for the spotlight!

1. When did you buy your first organiser and what was it?

On June 19, 2012, I bought a Mini Metropol in black.

2. What other brands have you used or considered using?

Filofax was my first love and I've always feel that it wins in comparison to other ringed bound brands. However, I have been drooling over those refillable Midori Traveler's Notebooks recently.

3. Out of the organisers you own which is your current favourite (Style and Size)?

My personal zip Holborn in wine is my favourite companion. It's the perfect size, lays nearly flat, and the buffalo leather is difficult to put down. The best part is that I always have at least one spare pocket. There are little touches too like the long zippered pocket within a larger pocket and the contrast stitching. The stretchy pen loop is lovely. I could go on forever.

4. How many Filofax or other brands of organisers do you own?

I'm down to 3 Filofaxes (I just gave one to my mom), a little Avery Dennison binder that I use as an organizer, and an "Advantage Organizer" that was given to me as a gift.

5. What is the oldest organiser in your collection?

I would have to guess my Tecnic. I don't think it has been produce in a long while.

6. What do you use your organisers for?

My Holborn is my wallet. I have been bullet journaling in it for a minute now. I like an organizer instead of a notebook for this method because I can use different sections for the monthly spread, to-dos, daily pages, and collections (plus a couple of additional sections). I use it for most everything except for school/work notes, budgeting, and shopping lists.

7. What was the feature about Filofax you like most?

I would have to say the online community. I get a lot of happiness from reading about other people's systems and sharing mine.

8. If you could design your own Filofax what would it feature?

My Holborn is pretty close to perfection, but I could always use another pen loop. It would be nice to have a zipper or something on the little pocket on the left hand side to keep coins from falling out.

9. How do you carry your Filofax?

I'm very practical these days- I carry it in my sporty sling bag that I use instead of a purse.

10. Which Filofax in the current range do you like the most? Are you going to buy it?

I have a crush on the cherry Classic A5. Alas, I cannot justify the purchase.

11. What is the most you have ever spent on a Filofax or other brand of organiser? Which model?

I spent $42.80 on my mini Metropol, my first Filofax and the only one I have ever purchased new directly from Filofax. I bought the others cheaper secondhand. It just goes to show you don't have to be wealthy to be a planner addict.

12. What's your favourite Filofax tip or hack?

I guess I have a couple. If you want to give your organizer some personality, you'd be surprised what you can find on your bookshelf. Also, paperclips are fantastic cheap page markers and packing tape is kind of like laminate.
Side note: I did not realize that the space inside the rings was handy for carrying an extra pen for an embarrassingly long time.

13. Turning to Philofaxy, what do you like the most?

The Web Finds have lead me to some really interesting and insightful blogs.

14. And what do you not like about Philofaxy?

The only thing I can think of is the Pinterest ban.

15. What was the last music track you downloaded or bought?

I use a streaming service and lately I've been listening to a lot of Milky Chance, Barbarisms, and the Beta Band.

16. Have you ever attended a Philofaxy meet-up? if not do you intend to one day?

I haven't and I would LOVE to attend a Philofaxy meet-up in Vancouver.

17. What was the last movie you watched?

Aliens 2.

18. What was the last book you read?

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.

19. George Clooney or Brad Pitt?

I'm a big fan of Fight Club so I'll go with Brad.
