Free For All Friday No 858 by Laurie

A5 Kendal Filofax

I noticed the Filofax Reminder App with the QR codes are in place for most of A5 size 2026 dated inserts, and some of the Personal size ones. I wonder how popular (or not) those have been this year and if the QR codes will persist beyond the 2026 inserts.

I get their point, I do often leave my A5 Filofax at home unless I know I'm going to need it. Recently I've started using a pocket size day per page diary/ planner as a satellite to bring out and about with me. I don't need to do much synching; I mainly use the little diary if I'm out running errands and need my list of things to do with me. I suppose I could just use a piece of paper, or even a Filofax page that I could put back in my binder when I get home. Any of those options would work.

Edited to add: I'm also considering using a Personal size Filofax as a satellite to my A5. My A5 could stay home and the Personal could contain my calendar pages plus some notes pages, just the things I would need when I'm out of the house.

Do you take your Filofax everywhere? If not, do you use a satellite system, either on your phone or on paper? Do you use a smaller Filofax as a satellite to your larger Filofax?

As always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/or discuss anything ring binder organiser related!

  1. I always carry my personal with me. Indeed, I've just prepared an extra A5 again for the time after Easter – and plan to leave it mostly at work. As for those horrible QR codes, I can hardly believe that fILOFAX listens to its customers :-) For the rest of the year, I've actually ordered personalized inserts without QR codes. They even have day per page inserts in cotton cream :-)) Do any of you have them yet? Do there already exist any photos of them "in use"?

    1. Hi, Klaus. I used the Personal size customised cotton cream page per day for 2024 and I'd recommend them. I currently find a week to view suits me better, but I do look back on these with fondness. I think the day per page and the personal size binder are an excellent combination. I have a blog post you may find helpful with some photos of them in use. If you look in the Philofaxy blog archive for February 2024 and open the "Web Finds - Saturday 10 February 2024" there's a link to my post "Feb 24 - What's the plan, Pam?".

    2. Thank you, Pam, for giving me a glimpse into your planner!

  2. ...and one more question for all avid cotton cream insert users: Do you remember how long they have been already around? And what do you like about them? I think they do have a certain vintage charm, don't they? And are they really the best choice for the use of fountain pens in Filofaxes?

    1. I have a diary insert from the late 1980's in cotton cream but over time the paper have gone quite dark compared to when it was new!
I like the paper because it's slightly thicker and take 'wetter' pens so much better.

    2. Thanks for sharing your knowledge again, Steve. I haven't found any information about the introduction of these inserts or any old pictures online, so it's really interesting that they've been around for so long.

  3. I looked at the Filofax app on the Android Play Store. There have been 5000 downloads, with an average review rating of 1.7/5 (from 48 reviews). It's created by some third party company (Rediform Inc, though the support email has a different address). I'd say those numbers mean it has been a failure. Of those 5000 downloads, I wonder how many are still using it,given the review comments...

    1. That's very interesting that Rediform is the one doing it. I ordered a personal Chester a little over a year ago directly from Filofax US, and that's the company that sent it to me.

  4. Yes to all the above. I usually have a personal with me, but sometimes life requires a purse too small to carry it. For that, I have a Field Notes that does go everywhere with me. It contains meal planning and grocery lists, other shopping, and I use it as a satellite when necessary. In the back pocket are the four to five most recent pages of my TBR list, which lives in a pocket Windsor.

My job is in an A5 Malden, which usually comes with me, but when it doesn't (factory tours and suchlike), Field Notes leaps into action once again.

  5. Hi, Laurie. I do take my Filofax pretty much everywhere - it's a personal size Holborn and I'm currently using the standard Cotton Cream week to view diary with the QR codes. I don't "use" the QR, but I don't find it as intrusive as I thought I might - I'd rather have that and get rid of the month printed in the "this week" area, but ideally have neither. Each morning I add the previous day's high and low temperatures and I've taken to parking them beside the QR code so it serves some little purpose.

I carry 4 months of weekly inserts in my Filofax which keeps it from being bulky. I rarely find I need to plan anything further ahead and if I do, I just note it on a sticky note until I can add it to the relevant page in my stored pages. I love A5 paper, nothing will ever beat it, but I have found myself becoming very attached to my Personal Filofax so perhaps something can beat A5 after all.

  6. I use a Lockwood personal slimline (in aqua) as my travel diary. I have a hertitage slimline A5 at home (brown) that I never take out. For my work I use three A5 Filofaxes- a black Adelphi, an Aqua Finsbury and a notebook. The bigger A5 ones I use because I drive to the locations, the notebook for the one I use the train to get to as it’s so much lighter to travel with. I don’t get the work mixed up between jobs that way. Lucy

  7. I have a Compact Heritage which rarely leaves my side. This is my main workhorse within which I write, make notes, draft ideas and list actions. From this I either transfer pages or transcribe them into other organisers than generally stay at home.

  8. I have to confess, the QR codes have put me off buying Filofax inserts this year and I switched back to Time / System for A5.

  9. I’ve taken to producing my own diary inserts using dotted paper or lined and a pen/ ruler. I get what I need and I’m using old paper that is sitting around. I find the production therapeutic and it’s a cheaper way to get exactly what I want. They don’t look as professional but no QR codes and no unwanted calendar bits hanging around. Lucy
