Thanks very much again to Paul for this nineteenth instalment of his wonderful guest post series.

Decoration... for Men (or for anyone really) 😉
I've seen various conversations about should we / shouldn't we decorate our binders (especially men), and generally until recently I myself have mainly chucked in a few photos or used graphically interesting tab dividers as minimal decoration. Until I watched a YouTuber that is, talking about notebooks, and how they used 'found ephemera' as decoration (apologies, as I don't remember the lady's name).
Once I understood that ANYTHING can be used to decorate a Filofax, I realised that any found items that could be stuck onto page turners at the front and back of my binders (in my case), and can accumulate into images in their own right. In fact, I love the way that they ARE random and the challenge then is to compose the most interesting graphic from this randomness, forming meaningful (to me!) images that track my movements / interests / aesthetic sensibilities.
Here are page turners from both my work binders (Portland 5/4) and home binders (Grosvenor 7/8). In my work binder, I collect mainly stickers I find on my work travels and the same for my personal home binder.
Why not give it a try yourself?
This is genius! I will most definitely use this method from now on, not only does it add some colour to the binder, but I find it so compelling how it could also be used to document travels and other events in such a simple but very accessible way.
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul, I look forward to your next Filohack!

I've been searching because I know the YouTuber you are telling from : It is @_randisullivan_
ReplyDeleteShe takes every stuff that comes and it makes a very nice carousel of decorations !
The YouTuber you've been mentioning is @_randisullivan_
ReplyDeleteEphemera collage is an entire subgenre of art/crafting, with many suppliers of 'ephemera' for your collage. Yours seems more akin to the memento board/table/collage.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit worried where your 'brain' sticker came from, though...
Kevin
Ah yes, a Brain supplement 😉
Deleteargh... not fair, don't give me something else to obsess about. lol. Just Kidding. I had to google what "Epherma Collage" is and oh boy, I am so hooked. Thank you!
DeleteI loved Paul's post. I am going to do something similar. Thank you, @Paul.
The thing is, I just put those two words into Google. And it seems it is A Thing...
DeleteI recalled seeing people record their lives in collage from, using ephemera like train & concert tickets, stickers, Polaroids, and real ephemeral stuff like Paul has used. And I was aware that collage using images from books and magazines has been around since cheap printing, but the whole industry of supplying specially printed books of 'ephemera' for such collages was an eye-opener... Then again, there's a whole Etsy world of custom stickers, which a colleague of mine contributes to in her spare time...

So inspiring, Paul. Hope, you'll keep on posting.
ReplyDeleteI especially like the "CAUTION this package arrived damaged" page. It looks professional. Do you by chance work in a lab?
ReplyDeleteNot a lab - a secondary school
DeleteWhich is a certain kind of lab... ;)
DeleteThank you for this Paul, it looks amazing! Executed perfectly. Lucy
