Free For All No. 367 by Anita

I rarely change my set up, but I admit that I am considering trying out something different for the new year (separate post to come). It's been on my mind for a while and it just feels right to give it a go in January once I have thought it through a bit more. I'm not experiencing planner fail or anything, but I suppose I just fancy a change! My system has pretty much been the same since 2009, so maybe it will be good to give it a bit of a shake up.

Do you have any planner changes that you are considering now, or will you wait until the new year until you implement them?

And as it's a Friday, please feel free to discuss anything ringbound organiser related, what ever the brand. Have a great weekend.

  1. Yes! I am going to try to make the switch from A5 (currently in a Day timer classic) to a personal. I have been in the a5 size for 16 years. Making the switch is scary and I hope I can do it successfully! I have just bought a Domino Patent Aubergine with Spots on Amazon. Wish me luck!

    1. Trisha, I just made a change from A5 to personal a few months ago, and I am enjoying the change. I love being able to carry my personal around in my purse. I end up using my planner for grocery shopping and other things that the larger size prevented me from doing. Good luck!

    2. Thank you for the encouragement! Honestly right now I am trying to not freak out about the paper size difference.

    3. I used to use a classic/desk/A5 size as well. Switched this past summer to a personal size and I'm loving it! I honestly didn't think I would and was experimenting at the time. Now, the classic/desk/A5's are just too big for me.

  2. I've been conducting a rather 'loose' A5 experiment for the last 3-4 months, but plan to terminate that and move back into one of my Personal binders. Exactly which one (or combination) I haven't decided yet. (NB I only ever use one binder at a time, so when I say 'combination' I mean swapping from one to another, not using two!).

I've also periodically 'stepped back' from my GTD system in order to try to get more effective task management, but that's very much work in progress, and I doubt could really be described as a 'new year' project as it looks set to continue well into 2016!

  3. I'm still tweaking my system. I made some big changes in my setup recently, but I still have some thoughts about some smaller changes. I really want my planner system to be simple yet effective, but tasks and priorities continue to be a struggle. I do feel like I'm really close to something I could stick to though, so I kind of aim to be set before 2016.

  4. I will switch to a smaller pocket binder provided the one I want can be sent to me. I like my Franklin pocket binder, but I want a lighter one for some meetings and errands. The new binder has smaller rings and dimensions. I have thought of some layouts for the week insert for it. I may use this smaller binder in combination with my A5 Filofax which I will keep on my desk. I will probably design the pages for the A5 binder and new pocket one.

I would like to use more technology in combination with paper in a way so that I am not carrying too many pages with me. The A5 binder will hold my week insert that has the details and I will retain the pages after the year. In the new pocket binder and on a device I will keep the necessary information for portability. For errands I do not need so many calendar pages and sections as in my current Franklin pocket binder. I also do not want to bother with taking items out of it for errands and then placing them back in the binder when I return. The lighter binder is not thick and heavy as other pocket binders and will be inconspicuous on errands. I like my Franklin pocket binder and the Wo2P insert that I designed for the rest of the year. If the new item cannot be shipped to me then I will continue using my Franklin one. I have not drawn my January pages. Having my insert far in advance is not familiar to me anymore because there are other ways of preparation and I can draw the layout in a short time.

  5. I'm going to find a different use for my monthly page.. It just seemed redundant to write birthdays, anniversaries, events, appointments, etc. on the monthly page (not to mention the boxes are too small) when I can just put them on the weekly. I keep the entire year's inserts in my planner so I can plan something up to 11 month's in advance!

Right now I've been tracking the weather and temperature on the monthly and even marking when I get certain symptoms (migraines, etc). I may also use it to put a small daily gratitude blurb.

  6. I've decided to continue using my Filofax A5, with Franklin Covey calendar pages I hole punched for the filofax -with a side of bullet journal, LOL.

  7. I am moving up in size. While personal size works well for me, its smaller capacity forces me to leave out some items. This adds up to a loss of convenience and control, I and things are busy now. So I will move up to a Franklin Planner in classic size, which I think will serve my needs well.

  9. I want to buy a new filofax. I am going to try a personal size. I want to go and look / compare and feel them in the store before buying. I love in London. Where can I go that has a large selection of filofaxes on display? WHS / Paperchase do not. I tried John Lewis at Bluewater and there were some but not all the ones Im considering. Have all the filofax stores closed down? Any other places I can try?

    1. There are now very few stationers that carry the full range or anything even close. Both the Filofax shops closed in London as did City Organiser. The problem has been people going to examine and handle organisers in store but then actually purchasing online. It's why I no longer buy anything from the likes of Amazon which has done so much to put local stationers and book shops out of business.

    2. The WH Smith at Victoria station, London, actually has a rather good range upstairs!

  10. I've been in downsizing mode since mid-2014. I successfully used a combination of Franklin Covey Compact and Filofax Personal. This new year, I'm trying to use all Personal size. Baby steps.
