Leap Years

Today is one of those days that only happens once every four years. 29th February it can throw out calendars by its inclusion.

Why do we have Leap Days/Years? It's basically to keep the calendar we use in sync with the orbiting planets so that summer starts and finishes other wise it would be slipping forward or backward through the years.

For a more precise explanation take a look at the Wikipedia page on Leap Years

On of my favourite 'Dad jokes' is to ask a younger person this:

'How many days are there in a Week?'

They will nearly always say "7 days"

'How many weeks are there in a year?'

"Oh that's too easy.... 52 weeks"

You get out your calculator..... 7 times 52 equals...... 364

'Where did the extra day come from?

"Leap years?"

'No there are 366 days in a leap year..... actually a year has 52 weeks and 1 day making 365 days'

At which point they get bored with this silly joke and want to go out and play football/play a video game or what ever young people do these days!

What will you be doing with your Leap Day?

  2. Very nice math joke... all my days is working... so 366th will be additional working day (which I'd just finished now).

  3. I treated it as an extra day to do some journaling and review the previous months.
