Download source files for the new A5 diary layouts

Hopefully you've found one of the new diary layouts that you like. But perhaps it's not quite exactly what you want. Perhaps you'd like the lines to be pink rather than grey, the dates to appear in Comic Sans font. Or perhaps you'd like to produce a diary now for 2013, 2014 or 2525. Maybe you want to print a diary for a particular period rather than a calendar year all in one go. If that describes you, you're in luck.

Today, we are making available the source files that Ray and I used to create the 2012 diary sets. Equipped with these, you can tinker around and design exactly the diary page you want, then get your PC to calculate and print it for any date range you choose. In each of the data source files, you just need to change one date - the starting date - and the file will calculate all the other dates for you. I've highlighted the cell with the date you need to change in each of the files like this:

If you want fewer dates, delete full rows at the bottom end. If you want more, drag the formulae down into more rows. If you mess up, you can always download the file again and start over.

As long as you have some basic Word and Excel skills, you should be able to give this a go (I know that some of you already have, using the source files Ray provided in November for the Day on Two Pages and Day on A Page layouts.) You'll need to be able to set up a basic mail merge file link, and there are plenty of web tutorials that show you the way - Google using the search terms: Word Excel Mail Merge 20xx (where 'xx' is 02, 03, 07 or 10, depending on your version.)

Depending on what version of Word you're using, Word may put section breaks between every record, which will throw out the mirrored gutter formatting in the layout. If it does, the solution is quite simple; do a find and replace on section breaks (^b) to remove them all. You'll also need to add a single page break to the front of the merged document so that each 2-page spread has gutters in the middle for the holes.

Now, if you just read all that and understood at least some of it, get downloading and have a go.

You can download finished versions for this year from our diary inserts page.

Here are the source files.

  1. Steve, you and Ray are ALL kinds of awesome. Thanks to Ray providing his templates and source files, I was able to fiddle and get a 2PPD A5 spread that will work perfectly for my WORK needs. Thanks so much again, both of you!

  7. I am going to attempt to make a 2013 diary (2 days per page lined). As I don't work Sat & Sun I want the third page to have Fri at top and the bottom to be divided for Sat & Sun and I can write any notes there too This would cut down on number of pages. I am a total beginner so any help would be welcomed. We have a big fancy MFD printer in work which copies and scans so I need to know how to set it so diary prints on both sides.

This has other hints and tips on printing... if this doesn't help. Do contact us by email, possibly sending a photo of what is being printed out and then we might have a better guess at what the problem is... without seeing it I can't even hazard a guess at why you are struggling... no good me saying.. it works for me!

I have one question: Is it possible to add day number, week number? (like: 65-300, 8-week)
If yes can you help me with that? or how to write a formula?

    1. Depending where you are in the World Week numbers aren't always the same... Once again the US seem to follow a different rule to the ISO standard. There is a week number function in Excel, check the Excel Help file, but it does follow the US rules on week numbers not the ISO standard.

Got another issue, I guess, I wrote 12/28/2016 to the highlighted area, but february remains 28, (should end at 29) am I doing something wrong?
      Thanks in advance.

    3. Google helped me to find, here is the formula for day number (in whole year) :
      =DATEDIF(DATE(YEAR(A2),1,1),A2,"d")+1

      and here is opposite:
      =1+(DATE(YEAR(A2),12,31)-A2)

      Week numbers:
      =WEEKNUM(A2)

P.S. If anybody needs it of course..

      Best regards.

  11. Hi there,

Thank you all for the hard work put on preparing all these templates and kindly making them all available to everybody.

    Now, quick question:
I downloaded the source files for the Enhanced TM Week Per View (v1.0) template. I did some changes, so the new template would fit my needs. But I can't save the source file with the modifications... :(
If I save it, it becomes a regular .doc file with only those 2 pages, and the mailing options do not work anymore to create the rest of the planner. I am missing something?

    Appreciate any help!

  13. Yeah, tried again with v1, but I really can't save the modifications and still be able to use it again to create other calendars. If I do, as I said, when I open the file again, it's not possible to merge so I get the rest of the calendar.
I just wanted to make sure I don't lose all the work and have to re-do it all next year.
    :(

  15. Hi Steve, first of all thank you very much for the work that you put into these diary-files.

I'm having trouble changing data in the Excel files.
As soon as I open them in a german Office 2010, word is unable to use the =text() function, and gives out an error on every and all dates.

If I use your precompiled Excel file for the word source document everything compiles fine. However I'd like to have a german planner :)

    Help would be greatly appreciated.
Do I need to format the cells in any special way?
Here's what it looks like initially, with Excel asking whether I'd like to work in that document:

    I click yes:

    http://s7.directupload.net/images/130402/orr6gu9o.jpg

and everything goes out of format.

    2. I don't think any of these files have the week number included in them because of the issue with the USA and Excel using a different standard for week numbering compared to the ISO standard!

  18. Oh! Thank you <3 So nice. I read a little further up the history that someone else also had a problem with the file.. Changing "Mmmm" to "MMMM" helped me to get the Month right. But YYYY to JJJJ did not help and Dddd to TTTT is totally wrong. I get a number instead of weekday. So as it is now, this is what is shown in the following columns:
    1st of month: #VALUE
    M1 to Su4: ###
NexMonth: Just a number between 100 to 1200

  19. Hi there, so excited to be able to make a planner the way I would use it, but......
I downloaded the source files for the Enhanced TM Week Per View (v1.0) template and not merged it comes through as 4 (total) pages mumbly jumbly only showing one at a time, not side by side and then once merged it shows them only one at a time (not side by side) with a total of 108 pages. I've watched both tutorials and nothing seems to get them right. What am I doing wrong?Am I missing something?

  21. I just ordered the Malden A5 Filofax and want to print my own inserts. In my Personal sized Filofax I used the week on 2 pages for which I downloaded the source files and adapted it to my own needs / style. It is the week on 2 pages in CC-inspired layout.

I wish to use this style for my A5 and adapt it to my style / needs as well, but unfortunately here at Philofaxy I cannot seem to find week on 2 pages in CC-inspired layout and the source files which belong to these inserts. Ray of mylifeallinoneplace offers the Word and PDF_ files for the week on 2 pages in CC-inspired layout, but unfortunately he does not offer the source files. Is there any chance you can add week on 2 pages in CC-inspired layout and upload the source files (Word and Excel) for the A5- sized Filofax?

    1. Ray's files and ours are exactly the same... common source. But have you looked at the Diary inserts page, but scroll down to the 2014 part of the page, the bit at the top is 2015 and not complete as yet, it's 'Work in Progress'

  22. Thanks very much for your time and patience to do these files. I found you last year and things worked like a charm for my DIY planner. This year I seem to be having a problem with the source files for DateSourceFiloMonthlyNew. When I enter my new date for 2015 calendar it gives me the correct date upon till the fourth week when I get this error =IF(ISERROR(DATEVALUE(AF2+1 & "/" & MONTH($D2) & "/" & YEAR($D2))),"∙",AF2+1). I then have to manually enter the dates after merging the document.
Is anybody else having this problem?

  24. I have A5 paper I'm trying to print the unlined Week Per View Journal on. When I change the paper size to A5, the page layouts get messed up and it's as if it zooms in. I've tried everything I can think of. It tells me it has something to do with margins, and I've tried fixing those. It feels like I have changed the paper size in every place possible. I know you recommend simply using A4 paper, but I'm trying to do my best with what I have.

    1. Hi Lisa,
If you are printing on A5 paper, go in to Page Set Up and set it to A5 paper and Scale it to 70% it should then be ok.

  25. I'm trying to print the unlined Week Per View Journal on A5 paper. I've changed the paper size in every place I can think of, and when I do so on Word, it almost zooms in on the page and only shows 2 days, instead of 4. I know you recommend printing on A4 in a booklet style, but I'm trying to make the best out of what I already have. When I try to print, it tells me the margins don't fit, which are set to mirrored. Any ideas? Thanks

    1. Scale the page to 70%

The margins issue is a printer dependent issue, click on Fix and see what it changes them to, generally it will be the bottom margin that gets altered.

    2. I'm sorry I didn't realize my first post went through.

The only place I can find scaling to a percentage is in the printing preferences. I changed that to 70, and printed. It made it fit better on the paper, but not the layout. On Word, it's still zoomed in, so that's how it prints. On Word, I couldn't find a scale to percentage, only scaling to a certain size paper (legal, letter, A4) and A5 wasn't listed.

    3. It will depend on which version of Word you are using. But try under File, Page Set up.
