FFAF No. 273

My husband and I were out the other night, and without going into too much detail, he touched my hair and messed it up. I complained that I didn't have a comb with me. "Don't you have one in your Filofax?" he asked.

That got me thinking. A small comb would fit into a Filofax, perhaps in one of the large pockets in the back of some organizers. Or what about a comb that snaps in like the Today marker?

I used to have a calculator that fit into a credit card slot.

What's the most unusual thing you've ever carried in a Filo?

  1. I carry a small letter opener to cut my A4 paper to an A5.

  2. I was thinking just the other day that a knitting needle gauge would be really handy and would fit on the rings nicely.

  3. I have the special cutter for washi tape that I cut from the washitape box. It's pretty sharp.

  4. I recommend: Some paper clips, Victorinox SwissCard (scissors, letter opener, tweezers, screw driver, nail file), sticking plaster, glasses cloth (will clean your iPhone, iPad, glasses, sunglasses, wristwatch, etc.)

  5. I carry a teeny weeny address book, that was in my Christmas cracker, pulled on New Year's Day.

  6. A link from a chain. It was given to me as a reminder of breaking free from things in my past.

  9. I just added a tiny pair of scissors I snagged from a travel sewing kit - it works perfectly for trimming washi tape, pages, etc! And they fit perfectly in the front zip pouch of the Malden!

  10. I keep a titanium "spork" with mine. A spork is a combined spoon and fork - often used for camping but equally great for eating a healthy salad on the train or parked in a lay-by, rather than paying a fortune for cafe sandwiches or one of those pre-prepared salad packs often supplied without anything to eat it with! My spork weighs about 10g and slips in an external full-length pocket.

    1. Great idea, Tim....I can see that really working for me when I'm on business trips. Where do you buy these "sporks"?

    2. David - they are widely available. Avoid the plastic versions and certainly the many imitations. I buy all such kit from my local outdoor centre here in The Yorkshire Dales, but they are even sold on eBay. One such UK seller is a Scout group so well worth supporting.

  11. I know it's not Friday anymore but I was wondering if anyone can help.... I have an A5 Finsbury organiser which I stupidly left it somewhere where my 19-month old could get it. Now the bottom 3 rings are several millimetres apart when closed (the top 3 rings still close properly).

Is there any way to recover from this or do I need to buy a new one? And as I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment, does the A5 Metropol come recommended?

  12. I stored previous years diary pages in my personal Filofax, address dividers and pages in another personal binder, and other dividers and paper in my slim binder. None of my planners had ring problems. Within a short time, I saw two gaps in the last two binders. I removed some contents from all three binders. The gap in my slim binder is gone and the one in my personal binder is smaller. I noticed that thicker paper like dividers and other heavier items put more pressure on the rings than thin diary pages. Also I am using Filofax pages in my A5 Boston instead of the Franklin Covey weekly leadership pages that I trimmed and punched. I had the Filofax insert from a long time ago but I bought other inserts to see which one I liked. I prefer Filofax month and week pages that are printed back to back for several reasons. I don't use markers or fountain pens on the pages. If you use inserts that are not printed back to back then you can place the week pages between month pages. However, you have to place the month pages either before the previous month ends on the weekly pages or after the current month starts. If the first of the month falls on Monday then that is not an issue. I like to see all the months together anyway. Several U.S. brands use thin paper for week pages and thicker paper for month pages. I don't know if that is their decision or the result of customer requests. Thicker paper and the extra page between the months add a lot of weight to a binder. The Filofax week and month inserts that I have used are printed on the same thin paper.
